Brakes..

I have a D3 with OEM brakes...os more honestly the brakes have been re-furbed with standard LR OEM parts
The fronts last maybe 25k miles & either the discs are worn scored or the pads are "done"....a pads only fix isn't viable as the discs are usually too thing, lipped or scored.
The rears last a bit longer...maybe.

I realise there is the V8 upgrade using parts from AS factors that use TRW source parts (TRW believe the CwmBran brake factory that was Lucas / Delphi...originally Lockheed / Girling)

Questions:
1) if this upgrade uses the original callipers....is it just the disc diameter that is larger ? (thus a larger surface area of disc that reduces wear / increases brake effect ?) or is the material different. ?

2) I realise the stopping power is better ....do these last longer ? & if they do by how much ?

3) the Brembo upgrade route...what does this entail ? I realise new callipers...have theses got more "pots" & does this have to be done with the lager dia discs...are these longer lasting ? & by what amount in miles ?

4) On V8's are the rear brakes the same or upgraded ? is there a Brembo upgrade ?

It's just the discs are bigger, that's why the calipiers carriers are needed.

Borg & Beck gear is good, I think they will wear at much the same rate maybe a slight improvement. You maybe tend to brake a bit harder with the V8 upgrade as they work better so you can brake a bit later, so that won't help the life of them. That's what i have found since mine were done well over a year ago.

Or you can fit D4 calipers and disks like me, disks are same size diameter as Brembos and pads are same size without the cost of Brembos Thumbs Up

Do the D4 brakes fit under D3 wheels?

Yes 19" HSE, but I have 19" D4 wheels that will not fit on a D3 without spaces or D4 calipers.

Is that both front & back ?
I have 19" wheels.......does this work with this size ?

Thanks for the data

I only have them on the front, V8 will fit on the rears with new calipers which I will put on when the standards have won out, but I don't find them necessary at the moment.
D4 rears and V8 rears are the same size(350mm), correct me if I'm wrong.

I have front and rear B&B upgrade from Advanced Factors. Very pleased with it. If you tow a caravan I think it is one of the best upgrades. I did mine when pads and discs needed changing do extra cost minimal. Hoping for longer pad and disc life.

The larger area increases disc life, the greater radius increases braking force. For comparable braking effort, the disc will certainly last longer. Thumbs Up

Basically you have the following options:

V8 - Min 18" wheels - Very simple and only needs the caliper carriers and bigger discs. Front and rear versions available.

D4 - Min 19" wheels - Requires calipers as well as carriers and discs.

4-pot Brembo - Min 19" wheels - Better design of caliper than the D4 (non-sliding).

6-pot Brembo - Min 20" wheels - The ultimate upgrade. Genuine pads are shockingly expensive!

I have the V8 discs front and rear. For me, the only other option I'd consider is the 4-pot Brembo (the 6-pot being a bit excessive!), primarily for the better caliper design, but I have a set of 18" wheels that I want to be able to use still so I'm happy with the V8. Wink
