kitting out a D4.....

So I've been costing up kitting out my D4 for some off-road adventuring and longer traveling - nothing too extreme - steering guard, sliders for protection, rack, awning, etc., possibly bumper and winch - and realising that for the same money I can buy an older 300TDi Defender with all that already on it.....

Now, the Defender is a nightmare to get to somewhere interesting, but would be perhaps better suited to the bashing it might get when there than my sparkly D4.....

Am sort of torn...... current idea is to put basic kit to extend the protection and capacity on the D4, but do a full expedition build only when I know I'm actually going on a longer one, and possibly do it on a different vehicle then. And in the meantime, buy the minimal good kit I need for the D4, ideally s/h, and aim to resell for a smaller loss in the future..... Buying another vehicle would probably mean building another garage too.....

have others faced this dilemma, and if so what did you do?

buy a defender and change the seats to something more comfy, it isn't that bad to travel between place, we go to the lakes a couple of times a year. The only time you wish to be in the discovery is on the way home. It is however, far less stressfull going up the more challenging lanes, and you can't do some in a discovery, sadgill they won't fit through the final gate and gategarth pass they aint allowed, and of couirse then you can start doing RTVs which bring out everyone's competitive side Whistle Whistle

You will of course then find out that a defender can cost as much as a discovery to run, you have to lists, a "need" and a "want" list. Whistle Whistle

The cost is hardly surprising though, the amount of physical abuse they take anything else would just fall apart!

Travel with you what have and be comfortable - http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic95767.html?
D3/4 is more than capable - just most don't use its capabilities. Mine would go anywhere the Defenders would and I had aircon and a comfy seat.
Very Happy

It's a dilemma, do I set the vehicle up with mods for touring or keep it stock to improve resale?
We've spent quite a few K on getting ours ready for some long trips in the full knowledge that the only person likely to buy the car a few years down the track (no pun intended) is someone with similar intentions. I'm prepared to take the loss at trade-in time, for a comfortable go anywhere (sensibly) we want to go vehicle.

If you can't find a buyer who'll pay a fair price. Provided you keep all the original parts that you took off, it shouldn't be to hard to return it to original spec when you sell it. You can then sell the off road/expedition kit separately.

Agree entirely - I change my configuration according to need, I have a commercial conversion (loadspace and divider) that I put in/out as I need it for expeds, roof tent (and sometimes rack) come off for the winter etc. I don't to drive around Hampshire with 40L of fuel and spare tyre on the roofrack ect - I want mine to be practical, so a day with the spanners is all it takes. Configure it how you need it, change it as you need it and keep all the old parts.
