I was about to get into the car and noticed that the back suspension had dropped completely on both sides but the front was at normal height. It looked as if it was about to pull a wheelie. Drove 5 minutes to Tesco and there was nothing on the dash. All levels looked normal when I got out.
I'd slung some carrier backs into the passenger foot-well and couldn't get them from the driver seat so had to go around and open the passenger side door. That's when I could hear the hissing. It sounded like a balloon leaking, quite noisy. Did some shopping for 5 minutes came out and it was still hissing and the back of the car had started to drop. The noise was coming from just behind the passenger side wheel arch.
The car is an 05 plate and I had the compressor changed around 3 years ago. This sounded like a hole/ puncture in a pipe. The compressor lifts the car no problem but I bet it's working quite hard at the moment!.
Anything I can do, look at before taking it to a garage? Is it a specialist/dealer type job or could your local skilled mechanic sort it out? Is it just a bit of pipe that needs replacing or could it be something else?

If it's a pipe, relatively simple change. Given the age of the vehicle I'd put a tenner on it being your suspension strut/airbag. Again, relatively straightforward to change.
If I'm wrong, post a link to your preferred charity and I'll deposit said tenner I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

The diagram on Page 84 suggests to me that the break is in the air hose that's marked 5. It looks like the air hose connects to the back of the reservoir and then runs back along it, around the wheel arch to the front strut or "LHF air spring and damper module " whatever that is. The hissing noise is prominent right on the corner of the wheel arch so I'm hoping it's the pipe and not a leak in the reservoir.
Has anyone replaced this pipe? Straight forward or a b**ch to do?

Air reservoir had rusted through!. £85 plus vat and about an hour's labour sorted it out. The local garage that I use now has all the software to play about with the car so he re-levelled/calibrated it as well.
£430 for that work plus a full service (all filters) and oil. He also changed the gearbox oil as well and I'll do the two diffs and "transfer box" (I think it's claled that) later on in the summer.
Not a bad result IMHO.

Hi I've recently upgraded to the disco 3
I noticed a hissing sound and located it under the passenger door
It appears to be the air reservoir is this easy to fix costly ect or I was hoping to weld it can this be done as anybody ever welded it ??

wel Mike, you have to release all the air from the tank and unbolt it, give it a good clean so any damage / holes are visible. you can ofc try and weld it. Noting wrong with that, but you need to do a "hot" weld due to the high pressure in the tank. I had planed to remove the tank on my d3 and have a look at it's condition, but never got around to do it..

As I would have put a normal weld on it !!
I did wonder as it's high pressure would it be ok guess I'll buy one new then thanks again mike.
