Update on above. New battery sorted most of the fault code.
As for the possibility of VSR, well there is slight VSR, but only slightly more than is normal in any engine. With the heads off it was evident that the valves only need to be cleaned, lapped and the gaps adjusted. In older cars resetting valves was common enough, but a lot easier.
Hence the heads are off the the engineers to be cleaned etc and should be back by the weekend. In the meantime I've been busy ordering all the parts that have to be replaced such as seal, gaskets, bolts and a couple if timing chain tensioners. Hope to have car back on the road next week.
