Removing side rails (steps)

Excuse the ignorance, but do the side rails need a special locking not to rmeove them?

I'm taking mine off and they seem to be fixed with

three bolts, two are allen bolts (simple) but the third has a pin inside it (see photo). I assume its a locking nut, but it just seems a round pin inside a round hole!!!

How do you get it off!!?

Cheers

You get a special bit that has a hold in the middle. I got a set of these in various sizes from eBay. Unless you have a steady hand and a small drill bit Whistle

It does look round though, even if you ignore the security pin. It does not look like a security torx or a security hex.

I've got tools that can remove round fasteners such as these, but as a 1 shot measure. Not sure what they are supposed to be removed with though.

Knock the middle pin out and hammer in a slightly bigger alan key or star socket.

Or mole grips if you can get it to bite.

Chisel and hammer and knock it round.

Cut a groove so you can get a big flat headed screw driver into it

There's not enough space to get the mould grips in, or square off the edges to get a socket or spanner at it!

I'm thinking it needs a tamperproof (security) 8mm Hex bit - I've spent all afternoon looking around and the largest I can find is 6mm

Any ideas?

Get an old hex key and drill out the centre, might work

I'd have thought some others on here would have kept the key for these steps.

Better sling them and get these Whistle

Tried drilling out and Allen key, but can't get hold of a bit strong enough, they keep snapping!

+1 Thumbs Up
Good quility small sharp chisel, try and cut a small groove in one side of the head with the first two or three hits then tap at an angle anti- clockwise, you will not drill an Allen key the metal is to hard.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
