Over the last two years, (amongst other things) I have replaced:
Inner and Outter track rod ends
Front Upper bushes and ball joints
(Front Lower bushes were replaced by PO a couple years ago)
HD Front ARB links
Poly ARB bushes
Lower steering column shaft
Tyres have been changed
brakes changed numerous times.
new drive shafts
new wheel bearings
new PS fluid flush

Which only leaves the following

shocks
steering rack
maybe lower wishbone bushes as they are ~40k / 2 yo now.

I remember seeing elsewhere on the net people fixed this with a new rack and that's the realisation I'm coming too. Tbh it 'feels' like that is the case.

I'm looking at going again to check suspension/steering components probably after the holidays and it will most likely be a different indie shop. At this point I would just be happy to find that something is indeed damaged/worn out. It's so frustrating when everybody tells me there's nothing wrong with the car yet it drives horribly.

One thing to mention: for me it's not really a problem of correcting the steering wheel. When going slow I just need to hold it firmly while going thru holes or over bumps with one wheel. If left to move freely the steering wheel returns to straight ahead position after the hole/bump passes. When going fast on highways it doesn't really matter if I hold the steering wheel or let it move freely as the shock when going over a bump or thru a hole is sharp and the steering wheel quickly returns to straight ahead after that.
If there are no bumps or holes on the road the car is driving straight, no pull left or right.

Changing the steering rack did nothing for me. Prior to changing the entire rack local indie has strengthen the previous one via the spring loaded yoke. This has indeed made a difference. The steering wheel movement over bumps was still there but to a lesser degree. The problem with this was that the steering wheel would no longer completely return to the straight ahead position which meant that it had to be hand guided every time. As this was not a real solution and was just masking the real issue while making it necessary for constant guiding of the steering wheel I've decided to abandon it and change the entire rack.

Complete front lower arms with bushes and ball joints now changed and lower steering column also changed. Not a single difference.
Don't know what else I can to to be honest.

One suggestion that I've recently had was to check the power steering pressure. According to this guy if the pump is generating to much pressure in the power steering circuit it could make the steering behave like this. I'm not a technical guy so don't really know if true or not. Any thoughts? Would it be worth checking?

Thanks

hmm...

Im not familiar with the exact operation, but could be 'over assisting' the feedback?

However to me it definitely feels like there is 'play' or knocking somewhere or that the the rack itself is not properly damped, which was a comment made to me by a local indie when they changed the front driveshafts (for no reason at all to Evil or Very Mad and hence the last time I used them).

Upper steering column?
Upper wishbone bushes?
Upper Ball joints?

All I can say is that after I had the UPPER wishbone bushes changed, for about a day the knocking/play was gone and then gradually came back. I put this to the bushes settling. I did have to go back to the garage to get another alignment done as I found it to be following every undulation in the road!

Maybe it is alignment now thinking about it?
