Thanks to Robbie's thread and the loom from Martin I have managed to fire the fbh from my laptop. Actually, thanks are also due to my brother who managed to load the driver to my win 8 laptop so that the kkl adaptor was recognised.
Once connected, we were not sure what to do but cleared the stored faults and then started the heater somehow. It ran and ran and ran... Once it got to 80degrees C I switched it off. Will need to do a bit more reading on what to do!
Anyway, it worked. Hope it fires by itself in the morning - fingers crossed!
Thanks again
James

One for Robbie: OBD - Serial port cable source
First post guys, having just jumped from D2 ownership to D3. (Frying pan to fire??) Not much on the D2 that I have not fitted/mended/changed, but the D3 is a whole new can of worms.
As my FBH is not operating, I have read every thread I can on the subject, and first job is to get it sorted. Robbie, I am trying to locate the OBD/serial connector cable as you show in your picture further back in this thread, but without success. All seem to be USB's. Can you give me any pointers to source these please? (For the same reasons that you mention - cant be doing with hours searching for non existent comms ports!)
Pandj is this what your after? not sure if it will work the same as the usb version but I feel sure one of the lads that know will tell you if it will do the job or not

Skippy, thanks for this - I suspect this is not the correct cable, however. I had looked at it but it appears not to possess the flashing lights, bells and whistles that Robbies cable shows.
No worries I suspect the led's are just for power and rx/tx data, I hope you find one Cheers Skippy.

I too bought the loom from Martin and also got a KKL with USB on Ebay.
I set it all up this morning but all the Webasto Software wants is a COM 3 Serial Port and in fact every time I open the Program it just runs away looking for a COM Port.
Can someone enlighten this numpty on how to get it to work with a USB connection?
I'm using an old Acer Extensa 5510 on Win 7Stew,

Hopefully an IT guru will be along shortly, but yes this is a problem that I ran into repeatedly. A lot of legacy kit wants to see a low number COM port number (ie less than 5) and even some newer designs want something less than 10 (eg Gap IIDTool). In my case my Toughbook has a whole raft of laptop-specific stuff built-in that also wants a low COM port number and I already had more than 10 COM ports allocated at start-up, so I was forever juggling stuff. Hence I went to a serial lead that happily grabbed COM 1 and all was well.
This article is but one of many, but it may give you enough to go on if you do not have too many things looking for the same resource:

My brother downloaded a driver for kkl 409.1 from tinternet for my win 8 laptop. Once installed the webasto software seemed to find the correct usb thing.
As you can tell, I don't really know what I'm talking about.
I'm afraid my brother is not here to ask either!

The driver for your cable should install and give you a Virtual COM Port - it will appear in Device Manager as a COM Port - probably with a high number (COM34 or similar).
Device Manager is found on Win7 as follows:
Start > Control Panel
Then if only 8 icons visible: Click "Hardware and Sound" heading > then "Device Manager" at the top with the shield
Or if all icons are visible: Double click "Device Manager".
You need to go into the properties as Robbie has shown above and change it to a lower one - somewhere between COM5 and COM8 will be fine. I have found that high COM port numbers do not appear in ThermoTest but I have not found where the cut-off point is.
You might see a note or get a message about the COM port already being in use, I've always ignored this as I think some Bluetooth software reserves a block from COM1 to about COM20-something
Then start ThermoTest from scratch (close it if already open and re-open). Then go to Extras menu > COM port and you should find the COM port you chose above is there.
Select it and press OK.
Then make sure ThermoTest is in WBUS mode - Diagnosis Menu > Device Selection. Click WBUS at the top and press OK.
Then you should be able to connect. Click the "refresh"-type icon on the toolbar - second from left.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Sloss, which exact adapter did you buy?
The adapters themselves don't have drivers, but the main chip inside does.
There appear to be two versions of the USB to serial chip which are in the KKL adapters and they have different drivers.
There is the FTDI FT232RL chip, and the WCH CH340G chip.
I have USB-OBD2 adapters containing each, and they both work with ThermoTest in Windows 7 64 bit.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I eventually got the KKL USB setup and in Device Manager it shows as working and on COM 3 which the Webasto Software wants.
Not going back out this evening to test it so I'll let you know tomorrow if it's cooking or not.
Thanks for the help gents,Stew,
