Whats all this spam about solid vs removeable Tow bars?

I have a removeable one - I have never seen a fixed one?

I have only ever seen the light duty quick release and a heavy duty bolt on.

Both are removeable! Infact I removed my removeable HD Tow bar today, and I am so Effin Excited - It is going to the local galvanisers tonight - and if they do a good job, the rear bumper is getting done next!

Just bought a 55 plate d3 hse, has the detachable tow bar still in. Looks like it hasn't been taken out for a very long time. From my understanding, the previous owner was big into horses so I'll assume it's done a brave bit of towing.

What is the suggestion on the recall?

I just took mine to my local dealer*and asked if the recall check had been done on it.
They had a quick check on the computer, said no and took it into the workshop whilst I had a free coffee or two in the waiting 'lounge'.
Mechanic came through for me and took me to the workshop to show me how to fit and remove it. I asked him about a couple of other things (squeaky bushes). Was asked if I wanted it washed (no), before going back to the lounge while they worked out a price for the bushes and brought the car round to the front.

A pleasant enough way to spend 30mins or so.

I'll give the Stirling branch a bell during the week. I dread to see what they come up with for my 11 year old šŸ˜‚

I wouldn't call it spam. Removable is the one which only attaches to the receiver on the rear cross member - called removable because it can be easily removed using the key in the lock. The solid or fixed bar attaches in the same way but also has 2 steadies which bolt to the chassis rails. While technically "removable", its not exactly a 2 minute job and requires spanners. Hope that clarifies for you...

My 2010 D4 has just been dropped off for the tow bar recall - I really hope they fit a fixed one, but they said one of three things will happen, and they cant say until the car is checked tomorrow.

Option 1 - Nothing. They will find everything to be OK
Option 2 - Fit a multi height fixed tow bar
Option 3 - Fit a multi height fixed tow bar and new chassis cross member

If you inform the Dealership that you plan to tow very heavy trailers/caravans on a regular basis, they will fit a fixed towbar for you. Thumbs Up

Got my Disco back today, freshly washed but still with the detachable tow bar. Apparently mine is all ok.

When I asked for a letter to say they would accept liability should it fall off I was told to speak to JLR - so just about to send a quick PM.

Tow Bar q393 Outstanding Campaign

Hi All

Just a quick question!!
I purchased a 55 plate discovery 10 months ago that had the towing electrics but no tow bar.
We have just purchased a caravan and reading about all the drama's with removable tow bars i
intend to purchase a witter r39A fixed tow bar.
The question..........
Have been on Topix and my vehicle has an outstanding campaign which is the q393 detachable tow bar one. I know i will be having a fixed one, but it still goes into the same receiver the detachable one would so....... Have i missed the boat regarding Land Rover checking it? being 12 years old.
The way i see it is, if the receiver bit is worn theoretically the fixed one could at some point be held by only the two side bars and two chassis bolts. I have seen on the net somewhere (possibly on this site) a picture of a disco 3 with a fixed tow bar that was hanging on by one of those bars with the caravan still attached to it!! JUST.
So much for a quick question. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Tow bar securing plates

On a similar note!!
Does anyone know if those detachable tow bar securing plates that i have seen somewhere would also fit on the fixed tow bar as extra security?
If so, does anyone know who it was that was selling them?

Thanks

Save all the stress, and buy a Tow Trust TL1. There are a number of threads on here about Tow Trust, and I've just bought one. Not fitted yet (only arrived today) but it looks like a great piece of kit. Thumbs Up

Think worth telling LR going to tow a very heavily loaded trailer on regular basis. Other have had fixed bar fitted search for towbar recall. Lay it on a bit heavy never know your luck.

LR gave me a fixed one when I told them I regularly towed our 3.5t livestock trailer as well as TA caravan.

LR wont let you go out with a overly worn receiver even with a fixed towbar. Correctly fitted into an unworn receiver nether type can fall out. A fixed one correctly fitted is fine in a lightly worn receiver.

My understanding is the wear is caused by leaving removable ones in permanently, damp between it and the receiver creates more corrosion than if removed, then when you tow the hitch breaks the corrosion up causing it to become loose in the receiver and also creating a grinding paste creating more wear. This cant happen with the fixed one as it has the two arms which prevent movement.

And it is for the above reasons why there is no recall on the towbar/receiver issue, it is a customer satisfaction programme to deal with user error rather than a defect/safety issue.

Bit of advice please.

Just taken mine in to the dealer's for the check after explaining to them that when I first had the disco I used a removable towbar but after getting worried by the knocking while traveling along and the movement in it after taking the tin tent off I had fitted an original fixed towbar then 6 weeks after the satisfaction programme came out Banging Head

The fixed towbar also moves now when the caravan is taken off as seen by the service manager himself.

Went back to pick the disco up later and was told that nothing had been done/tested because the programme didn't apply to the vehicle because it had a fixed towbar fitted.

Questions are,

Do you think the receiver should have been checked for wear since the fixed locates into the same place as the removable?.

Has anyone else taken a vehicle in with a fixed fitted? If so what was your experiance/ outcome.

Thanks Bow down

It must be an UK only thing, I checked with JLR here a few months ago and they said that all of Scandinavia ā€œdoesnā€™t participateā€. All we have are removable ones.
