So mine went in yesterday and now has a brand new fixed tow setup installed courtesy of land rover! The brake servo was also replaced as well under that recall.

The removable swan neck tow bar is good. If you tug the odd trailer or caravan, then it'll do just fine. What's more you can take it off, put the cover on over the plugs and keep the sleek lines of your Disco when you don't need to tow.

I tow a 4 berth caravan with mine plus the odd medium sized trailer with a quad bike on it and it's absolutely fine for that. But if you are wanting to tow trailers with a fair lump of plant on, or horse boxes with a couple of horses in it, then for sure I'd go for a fixed tow bar. Perhaps if I was towing something pretty often too.

So see it for what it is. A useful addition to your vehicle. I think the only real problem with them is that they can stick in the slot, making them hard to remove if you don't take them off regularly, hence why I'd go for a fixed one if you would be inclined to keep it in place all the time.

I fitted a fixed one to my new D4. I've read some not good reports so prefered the knowledge mine is safe and secure all be it not as pleasing to the eye.

Mine went in for the recall and they said its failed so would fit a fixed tow bar I left it with them for a week as I was working away the dealer rang me to say it was ready to collect on the Tuesday I fetched it on the Friday afternoon only to find there was no tow bar fitted. I went back in and they said its definitely been fitted so I argued with them saying it hadn't only when the bloke came and had a look did he believe me. It turned out they fitted it to someone else's car and not mine lol I also don't understand how it can be a fixed tow bar when part of it goes in the hole that had failed the test? There is 2 brackets that are bolted but I can't see how they take any weight

Is there a global LR database of what vehicles have been tested, am pondering if mine has been looked at.

Recently purchased my 2010 D4, but removable towbar removed 'completely' from car by previous owner, didn't even put the plastic cap back in. Looking at the socket it's clearly been used, suppose a dealer will just tell me to ......... if I ask for the check to be performed?

You have to have a towbar for them to check ...maybe borrow one so that they can see if your crossmember is ok

Hmm I'll have to find a friendly D 3 / 4 owner who'll let me borrow one.

What happens if they decide it needs changing though, will they let me keep the towbar?

The standard procedure if there is a fault is either to exchange your detachable towbar for a new one or to fit a multi-height fixed towbar in which case they keep the detachable.

I took my car into marshals today it failed although the cross member is fine.
Offered me a free fixed Tow bar only.
I hardly tow anything, occasionally a sailing dinghy that weighs less than 100kg or a bike rack.
So don't really need it but how often do landrover give things away free!

How badly does a tow bar affect departure angle?

Not sure what I want to do.

Mine needed changing, fixed towbar, crossmember and all. As I had to book it in a few weeks later, and I knew I'd have a couple of local towing jobs in that time, I asked for the detachable back. I had to sign a waiver stating that I was aware of the problem, which I did, and they gave me the detachable back.

When I took it in for the replacement work I left the detachable at home, they didn't ask for it so I've still got it and the new fixed towbar.

I only tow occasionally but the trailers are heavy and the fixed towbar is a lot better.

Fancy ridding yourself of the detachable tow bar for a reasonable sum?
