i bought mine 2 years ago, its a 55 reg,so 10 yrs old, there is a little play in the towbar,are you saying i can still contact them after 10 yrs about this, if work is needed ie cross member/towbar who picks up the bill !!

Hi again,
What read all 20 pages........
I just want the info......
Already emailed LR to complain about this again.....
My car at the time (2012) was still in extended LR warranty.
Not had any call/recall on this.
Both LR and local dealer knew I was happy with the tow ball......
Not very happy/impressed......
So long story short - are LR still replacing these with the fixed model?

How about you find all the answers and post the summary for the benefit of others. Demanding that others do the work for you is a little bit rude. You could, at least, have read the first page or so. People made an effort to post pertinent information for you and the subsequent posts reflect the problems encountered and JLR suspending the campaign.

I am joining in and trying not to be rude...... as I have already done on the other 100+ posts I have contributed to.
Wasn't aware I was demanding anything, just asking for opinions/experiences, and contributing my own experience and feedback received from LR on this from years ago.
And asking one simple question - are LR still replacing the tow balls.....

I read (yes I can read and have been able to for quite some time) through the first 3 pages and then jumped to the end when I lost the will to read on due to the off topic stuff that started to come in.
Found the one I wanted to read eventually, on page 6, or was it 7...... or 17 - lost count/interest.
I'll post back when I hear back from LR and the dealer, if they ever write to me and I can be bothered to read the letter - just hope it isn't 20 pages long or no chance.
I've actually looking to buy a fixed tow bar for the past few months as I am fed up with all the rattling from my tow ball (5+ years since I first noticed it, and was told at the time and since that it is quite normal and ok and nothing to worry about, by LR and the local dealer) and I was going to send the invoice to LR....
Looks like I may not have to do this now if they can get their side sorted out.
BTW (just asking, not demanding anything) have there been any known/reported fatalities with regard to this issue? I've read about a lot of serious incidents, mainly with horses and mini-diggers but no fatalities fortunately.
My 2 cent - I find it strange that the D3 was billed as the best tow car in the world, yet the simple task of connecting it to a trailer is/was beyond LR.
(Similar issues with the spare wheel winch - but there are about 1000 pages on that buried in the forum. And the front driver windows mechanism that break when the door closes....
And did I mention the Hitachi compressor...... and ERG valves.....)

The reason for taking the TB off is a corrosion mechanism called crevice corrosion.
That particular type take place, you guessed it, in a crevice, and, with the right conditions can be much faster than open air corrosion.
In a crevice such as the TB fitting there is moisture, oxygen and steel, the 3 things you need to get corrosion going really well.
Reading this with great interest....yes all the pages as they happen...not being contrary Shloss..
what I have seen on the tow ball attachments (my D3 & three others - one D3 & 2 D4's) is clear evidence of FRETTING (or contact) corrosion:
from Wikipedia (the ASM handbook explanation is far longer & I guess no one would read it anyway)
"Fretting refers to wear and sometimes corrosion damage at the asperities of contact surfaces. This damage is induced under load and in the presence of repeated relative surface motion, as induced for example by vibration. The ASM Handbook on Fatigue and Fracture defines fretting as: "A special wear process that occurs at the contact area between two materials under load and subject to minute relative motion by vibration or some other force."
"The amplitude of the relative sliding motion is often in the order from micrometers to millimeters, but can be as low as 3 to 4 nanometers"
"The contact movement causes mechanical wear and material transfer at the surface, often followed by oxidation of both the metallic debris and the freshly exposed metallic surfaces. Because the oxidized debris is usually much harder than the surfaces from which it came, it often acts as an abrasive agent that increases the rate of both fretting and a mechanical wear called false brinelling"
so what do you see ? a fine red-brown pasty deposit (not powder or liquid) that adheres strongly to the surfaces in contact (mating ones).....it has the ability if not sorted to accelerate wear in any mechanical assembly just at the place it isn't needed..it looks just like red grease...but it isnt grease.
You get this in some large mechanical assemblies that are either high mass (weigh a lot of Kg's) &/or are subjected to (external) loads. The usual methood of preventing this is to either ensure assemblies are "tight" (made / fitted in such a way that no movement can occur...shaft, keyways, splines, couplings etc that are fitted well - no initial movement) or treated before assembly with specific things....one old fashionied one was to apply tallow. (Kluber the top of the heap lubricany maker can supply assembly compounds that are designed specifically to combat this).
Studying the assembly drawing s (I've made my own) & the dimension of the mating parts ( the way they can move sideways when under load is the perfect recipe or set of conditions for fretting corrosion.
So strangely one way of preventing the movement & subsequent wear is to apply something like these
& its what I have done to mine.BREXIT - done properly.
