The Ho.....gap you mean is normal. Have had a look at the back of mine and with the seats down there is that gap too.

Gap? I'd say more of a crevice.

Anyway, what's all this about an area for the loadpsace cover to be stowed when folded flat... I normally end up chucking it in the garage, am I doing it wrong?

Yep, your doing it wrong. You need to shove the load cover in the large crack. It fills the hole nicely Laughing
