Catastrophic engine failure?!

Has anyone heard of anything like this, I've searched the forum but ther doesn't seem to be any specific trend amongst the Disco4 family.

I have a disco 4 XS that is literally just had its 4th birthday (warrantee ran out on the 28th October), it's done 45k miles and has a full landrover service history. It is due a service about one, the little reminder came on a week or two ago.

I went to drop my son off to school and I heard a slight noise that I couldn't figure if it was my imagination or not. Once it got a little louder I realised the noise (knocking) was inline with engine revs so I stopped and had a listen. It was not that bad, just loud enough now to make me realises I wasn't just making it up. Elected to drive off the main drag to go on a parallel road where I could stop for a short while and check the oil with the new non dip stick version.

Never got there, noise became massive for about 3 secs and the engine seized - to be verified!

Any thoughts experiences would be gratefully received - I know this is going to be expensive!

Ouch, not good.

What did the oil level report after the seizure and what did it look like under the oil cap?

Oil was over 3/4s full and the computer said 'OK'. Under the cap looked normal, no metallic bits and seemed wet - didn't shove my fingers in mind.

Any visible damage, oils seeps, discoloured coolant or loose belts?

I suggest contacting Pete at LRCS with your details and VIN.

No, nothing. The RAC man was equally confused. No external tell tails at all, literally just a knocking noise (not even fought running) for a minute or two and then endex.

It doesn't appear to be a widespread problem but I had a seized engine in a '59' plate Disco4 at two years old and 40,000 miles and my father had a seized engine in a '60' plate RRS (3.0 litre V6) at 3.5 years old and 80,000 miles.

Both went suddenly without any noticable signs that something was wrong and both had plenty of oil in the engine. They were both sorted FOC by Land Rover although the RRS took a bit of discussion as it was out of warranty.

…and now we know that the oil pressure light on the D4 (at least to MY13) is incapable of detecting a fluctuating oil pressure.

Not a great situation.

We were not given a reason for the failures but as we didn't get an invoice either we didn't push for answers.
