I don't understand why they just don't use the PIN number solution used by Vauxhall, Fiat etc. in the UK you don't automatically get the number as the insurance companies asked for it to be restricted. Apparently loads of people left the cards in the glovebox in the driver pack.
Without the pin code you can't easily program a key, even with aftermarket kit. Even the dealer has to apply for it with V5 and address ID for the car.
Would make it much harder to steal.

10 seconds with the guys laptop already setup ready to run in an unlocked vehicle...
In the real world they would have to smash a window and climb in, put the blank fob in to bring the ignition on then connect what ever device they have to the obd port to reprogram the immobilizer, during this time the alarm would be going off... Admin on Facebook Discovery 3 & 4 Ownersgroup

All brought about due to EU rules saying anyone should be able to produce coded keys... another 'benefit' of being in the EU?
It would seem to be an easy step to go down the PIN number route, even the tired old pool car at work has that method employed, what is the difficulty in that? Steve

Been in touch with JLR customer relations re. the subject on Watchdog. On their advice contacted my local dealer. They advised that Disco 4 has no problems as long as the car is double locked. It is Range Rover and Evoque that need software upgrades/checks. 8)

And if locked in a public place, locked with the door buttons vs. fob

Absolutely Adam, I forgot to mention that. Apparently the fob signals can be intercepted to prevent the car from locking thus affording access. Buttons not fob. Cheers Lukey.
