Steering Rack leak - OS - help please!
Hi, just found a power steering leak on my 2010 D4. Its coming near the gaitor on the off-side. I've pulled the gaitor back but no oil came out - it looked dry inside (a little manufacturer grease that's all).
There is a metal 'box' just inside of it & above & that is fairly coated with oil & some pipes underneath it. Someone said on here that they had to have the seals done on the the rack - does this sound like the problem or does anyone know where they are?
Any help much appreciated!

I'd say check the fluid level every trip until you get it sorted.
Having found out half way round a roundabout that most of the fluid had leaked out of a D4's steering, I can say with confidence that it gets very heavy without it!

Yes, I dare say! I might have to buy some stop leak tomorrow and see if it helps, at least it'll top it up for now.
I wonder if like on some of the D3's, the casting is leaking on the damned thing? I'll clean up and see what i can see ..
There is a used rack on ebay at the moment from a dismantler for just over £100, I wondering if I should buy that as a fix? Dread to think what LR will want?Discovery 4 - 3.0 - 2015

Its out of warranty & I'm not normally a dealer type customer!
I only bought it the other day (privately), I didn't see any evidence of a leak when I bought it and I looked pretty carefully (I can't see the side cover in the wheelarch has been removed before/recently), so it may well be coincidence.
Are you suggesting that LR might do some goodwill on these - it seems quite a few are leaking and this has been going on a long time with the D3's?
I'm away to France on Sun with it for a month, its going to be tricky getting somebody to sort it in that time. May have to use Stopleak and keep it topped up?Discovery 4 - 3.0 - 2015
Sounds very similar to the problem I had with my MY11 D4 XS. Steering became progressively heavier over a couple of days until SWMBO took it out and could barely get it around the corner into our drive. At this point oil was clearly dripping from the rack near the gaitor and over two small pipes of approx 7.5mm dia.
The fix was indeed new seals (LR009346 & LR020210) that cost no more than £2.90. Oh and £156.00 labour.Front Runner Rack, OEM Ladder & RAI, Tuff-Trek Foxwing, B'rakhah Ingonyama Expedition Trailer, RLD's Spare Wheel Protector, Bodsy's Bars, Empty Pockets! Thanks alfamale (like your dancing picture BTW!), do you know exactly where the seals are? Are they on the pipes next to the rack or on the rack itself? Do you know which side of the rack it was coming from?
If you're looking into the engine compartment they are to the left hand side and towards the bottom...two small high pressure pipes that may well be coated in oil. I did have some pics so I'll see if I can dig them out.Front Runner Rack, OEM Ladder & RAI, Tuff-Trek Foxwing, B'rakhah Ingonyama Expedition Trailer, RLD's Spare Wheel Protector, Bodsy's Bars, Empty Pockets! Thanks, I've just had another look. I thought it was leaking from the big plug at the bottom, so I popped that off (I thought it was a drain plug or something), but nothing comes from it. Not sure what it is, it's got a bearing behind it?
Anyway I've just looked from the side, it might well be those 2 pipes, I need to have a closer look but its difficult to get your head in! My friend (who's an independent dealer) says the seals are part nos LR009346 & LR020210. I'll investigate further - thanksDiscovery 4 - 3.0 - 2015

OK, this is my photo - I have taken the pipe off in the top middle of the picture, I think this is where the offending o-ring was sitting. It is very difficult to work out where it is leaking as the fan scatters the oil everywhere! (note, I've pulled my gaitor back)

Landrover sell the 2 O-rings (an 11mm & a 6mm) for £1.95 each, but they had to be ordered so I've got two from my local bearing/seal shop - he thinks they should be the same though they looks a fraction thinner (& I mean a fraction), these are a standard size - BS010 & BS011.
They are easy to change, just take the 10mm pipe off, you will loose 1/2 pint of fluid which you can't do much about, my friend (an independent LR specialist) told me to use LTF spec fluid to top up (about £4 a litre), its for power steering and auto-boxes.
I shall report back if successful - fingers crossed!
I'm gong to leave the covers off & take it for a test drive nowDiscovery 4 - 3.0 - 2015

I'm sceptical of quick fix products ... how long has this been in? If there is something that has failed, I wouldn't be happy driving around in it until it's been sorted.
I've driven the car 30 miles or so tonight and it doesn't appear to be leaking so far .. I'm leaving the covers off for a few days to keep an eye on it.Discovery 4 - 3.0 - 2015
