And they wonder why.....

....a 9 year old girl being taught how to use an UZI accidentally shot her instructor.....and they still can't see a correlation between gun ownership and crime/murder....for a supposedly intelligent country, they certainly hide it well

Shocked Bonkers. How anyone can think it safe to let a nine year old fire an UZI on automatic is crazy. They would have no chance of control at all. Sad

I don't think she owned the Uzi, I own 3 shotguns and a rifle, does that mean I am 4 times as likely to commit murder?

This accident was not down to gun ownership, but a poor attitude towards gun safety. At the end of the day a gun is a tool and you wouldn't let a 9 year old loose with a chainsaw but you might with a junior hacksaw.

I think you may be missing the point......I wholly understand what you're saying....but what Censored -wit lets a 9 year old loose with an UZI,regardless of whether is in a safe environment (gun range) or not ?
At what point in her life will knowledge of that weapon be of use to her ?....many of them are taught at an early age how to use a handgun properly..... It says her parents were filming it,I think that tells us all we need to know about the attitude.
A guy I know told me when he lived in the States he didn't own a gun.....his neighbours told him he was " irresponsible " Shocked ....he pointed out the percentage of murders that are carried out using the victims own weapon, but it fell on deaf ears.
Plenty of my friends have shotguns (I'm going beating with them in a couple of weeks) and a couple have rifles, but I don't feel they are more prone to murdering me or anyone else Wink ....they are responsible....letting a 9 year old girl fire live rounds with an UZI isn't Thumbs Up

I have some American family courtesy of my auntie being a GI bride. They have no idea of how the world sees them. The gun ownership issue is crazy there but they all spout on about how it's their constitutional right to bear arms. One of them owns twelve guns. He's only got two hands! They won't listen to argument against owning guns.
They won't listen to a trace of any criticism of the USA either. They are very insular.

I quite agree. My son started shooting air rifles at 6, not the same league as an Uzi but still lethal, he views a gun or rifle as a tool not as an extension of his manhood as many might see it. I never let him have toy guns and much to his chagrin at the time I wouldn't let him play airsoft as in my house you don't point guns at people full stop.

So I can see perfectly why youngsters are taught to shoot in the US, but the weapon has to be matched to the child's ability and strength to handle it. I've never fired a fully automatic weapon of any type but I have fired hand guns from .22 up to .50 and I can't imagine a weapon a heavy as an Uzi is ever going to end well in a 9 year olds hands.

I can understand why a rural farmer, living miles from the nearest neighbour, would require a firearm. Both for vermin control and for peace of mind living in an isolated community. That I do understand fully.
What I don't understand is the mentality that tells people to have guns and firearms for residents who live in well populated areas. Are they really that terrorised by the thought that somebody may attack them that they need a whole arsenal at home?
The only thing I can presume is because one person has a gun, they all have to get one to stay ahead. Rolling Eyes

For a supposedly civilised society they sure are s**t scared of each other. Rolling Eyes

I worked with a guy in Mississippi who was a proper gun nut.
He was an avid hunter, so had many shotguns and rifles, but he also had 2 AK47s that he loved to shoot together, one in each hand.

His reasoning was that it was for defence.
A fully automatic assault rifle....for home defence.

What exactly was he expecting to be defending against???

The honest truth is that they are a nation obsessed with guns and they have to have more than anyone else.

There was a hunting store that I went into that had a small, pink 22 rifle especially for kids. They also had all of the ammo out on the shelves and the number of boxes that were missing 1 or 2 rounds was frightening.

The scary thing about the US is that when anything out side of the norm happens they buy guns but most don't have any gun sense.

After 9-11 gun sales increased dramatically, particularly assault rifles. Who were they going to shoot? WHY would you think an AK47 would have stopped the Twin Towers?

Americans are incredibly insecure and having a gun helps them feel better about themselves. Some of my former colleagues in the US openly carried weapons or had them in their cars. Without exception they believed it was their right to carry one and you were irresponsible not to do so. The fact that they were also complacent in gun security and handling was irrelevant.

Kids and guns don't go:

My mate works for a US company and on a regular trip there one of his colleagues took him to his house to show him his gun collection. All locked in cabinet (but sure most teenagers know all about mum and dad's 'security' or 'secret hiding places' Rolling Eyes ).

He didn't have a clue what each gun was but the pictures showed a couple of hand guns you see in the movies, a big Censored off 'dirty harry' magnum, an Uzi clone machine gun, couple of rifles and a pump action shot gun.

Then took him down the range to 'fire a few rounds', regular thing he does with his shooting buddies.

My mate doesn't 'get' the gun culture and his colleague is an average family guy joe living in a normal suburban setting yet has an arsenal that could take out maybe a 100+ people in one sitting Shocked

He did say firing the guns though was one of the most exhilarating things he's ever done but the thought of handling these things in your home scared him to death. His colleague thought HE was the odd one Rolling Eyes

The gun problem in the west seems to be a particular problem in America, my understanding from friend that live there, is that Switzerland has a reserve army as such most households have an assault rifle at home, however there are very few gun related murders and accidents.

I used to visit our offices in Helsinki on a regular basis, at that time gun laws were similar to the USA i.e. you could buy what you wanted on production of valid I.D. The guys in our office had an amazing collection of hand guns, I can remember going to a range in the city centre and firing a WW2 luger which really packed a punch. Again very few gun related murder or accidents.

I'm sure that Canada has more guns per head of population than the USA and you hardly ever hear of any major incidents over there (Of course the recent killing of three Mounties is an exception) - There's something the the American psyche

My old American boss was a big hunter and had loads of guns, including revolvers one of which was a .45
