Noisy Diff?

I have a 2005, 2.7 RRS with 75k glorious miles travelled under her. ('Her' as she's so bloody temperamental). Over the last few months I've noticed an increase in a whining, bearing rumbling type noise. Originally I thought it might be a wheel bearing but after a bit more research I think it may be diff related.

Observations -
Noise most noticeable over 50mph
Noise hardly there on acceleration or steady power, but kicks in on release of the accelerator (over-run)
If I change into Neutral noise pretty much disappears until I select Drive again
No change in change of steering direction

Conclusion -
From what I've read this could be the rear diff pinion shaft bearing?

I'm no mechanic but do have access to a workshop with a lift at work. Can anyone confirm likely fault from this information, and also is it viable to replace the pinion bearing (if that is the problem) or is it a new diff required? In addition, I'm thinking of renewing all the oils in both the diffs and the transfer box. Is this a good idea or a waste of money?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

OK so now I'm confused......Spoke to two different Land Rover Specialist Garages and described the same fault. One said 'sounds like the prop bearing, had to change loads, hardly ever had a problem with the Diff), then spoke to another who said 'almost certainly the diff......done loads recently, about £400 to rebuild). Anyone got any ideas of how to definitively work out which is at fault? Confused

Probably the best way to figure this out is to get a small lapel mic and attach it to the different fault areas that might cause the noise. Record and listen to the sound to hear if the noise increases or decreases.

My rear differential failed (apparently, I haven't got it back yet) and the only symptom was a low speed hollow metal on metal scraping sound from the rear.

Good luck.

Thanks guys, appreciate the help. I like the lapel mic idea, I was thinking of doing a similar thing with an old mobile phone, and dialling the number through the cars blue tooth system.........

Use a small child to listen in certain areas!

might be worth taking a sample of oil from the diffs to see if there's any contamination

Hmm I've got a four year old daughter, maybe I could strap her to the chassis and go for a quick spin along the motorway.........if I try to take a sample of the diff oil is it likely to come pouring out of the drain hole before I get chance to get the plug back in?

Tony, check it from the fill hole. Easy way is to use a piece of polyethylene tubing. Open the fill hole, drop in the tubing, cover the open tubing with your thumb and draw out.

This post has great pics, scroll down to the rear differential. http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic32281.html

Good luck

Why not change the oil in both diffs. That way you can see how much swarf is on the drain plug. And when you find the faulty part in the end, if it is a diff then you have only lost £13 in oil ish and thumbs up because the oil in the other one is done. If is not a diff then at least you have done the oil in them which is never a bad thing!

Agree, I'll order the oil today, maybe do the transfer box as well, anyone know what oil is required for that?

Assuming you don't have Locking Rear diff which uses special oil then the transfer box uses the same oil as the standard diffs

If no locking rear diff both are Castrol Syntrax xo or something like that, that is what LR recommend and what I used.
The transfer box takes special transfer case fluid ONLY.

This was my front diff sump plug!
