The delay in throttle response on D4 2014 ... |
|
... surely due to anti-pollution regulations, as can be eliminated or at least reduced? The only choice is to remap the ECU?
I don't need to increase the performance, I just wish the engine were more ready to the throttle, such as it is on my old 2006 D3 , in which when I just touch the throttle the car responds immediately, without the delay that makes the ride less smoother. Not sure about the MY14, but the MY13 had a transmission software problem, which was fixed with an update.

Thanks phl, but you talked about a trasmission software problem, maybe a gearbox software problem, instead I'm talking about a problem of the throttle response that is too slow when I press the pedal.
On my old 2006 D3 the response is much more fast. D3 TDV6, Zermatt Silver, Coil Spring Suspension, Tyres 285/55 R 18

I think phl is making a valid point, if the autobox is not responding as it should then you may well feel that it is throttle response. There are problems with the 8 speed ZF Auto affecting numerous other marques that use this gear box, it is worth having the software option checked out.

Yes, it does seemed like a throttle response problem, but it was the transmission trying to decide if it needed to change down, and being wrong footed. Much like being in 5th when you are nearly stopped, and putting your foot down; nothing much happens until you change down to 1st or 2nd.
The initial software update solved that, but there was a very rough down-shift apparent as you slowed down. The following update removed that, but put you in the correct gear.

Let's compare notes then...
Mine is a 2014MY Commercial, supplied on 1st March so just over 3 months old and currently on 7,700 miles but I am losing confidence in the ability to pull out at roundabouts owing to the throttle delay!
Typical scenario is that I come into a roundabout, often with less than a full view of the rest of the roundabout so am slowing to enable me to halt if necessary.
On seeing that the roundabout is empty, or if there is a suitable gap, apply throttle to pull onto the roundabout...
...nothing much.... nope, still not a lot.... whoooooooooommmmmph..... Light afterburners and career onto roundabout, over the other side and off again with the Fun Prevention Officer scowling at you, going, "why are you driving like that....?"
t'aint me missus - it's the car...
Don't know if this is throttle lag, issues with the first stage turbo (I assume that the 14MY still has a sequential turbo) or what the issue is - it really doesn't make for a pleasant drive and I rather wish I had hung onto my 2011, 6 speed Commercial.
I have moaned to the supplying dealer who is looking into it but doesn't think there are any known issues with the 2014 vehicles.
Can anyone help? D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY
D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)
Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

Yes liftedDisco, your situation is largely worse than the mine, but the symptoms are the same.
I am owner of 2006 Discovery 3 too, so I can compare the two cars.
With my 2006 Discovery 3 in gearbox neutral position just I touch on the throttle the engine accelerate much fastly; after the engine decrease much fastly.
Instead with 2014 Discovery in the same situation there is a clear lag: the engine accelerate not immediately and in consequence, when it begins to increase it accelerates too much.
Of course this behavior influence directly the ride, that on my D4 is largely less smooth and enjoyed than on my D3.
I think the problem is on the software managing of throttle, that on D4 2014, cause to pollution reduction or consumption reduction is retarded.
I hope there is a software update that can improve the situation. D3 TDV6, Zermatt Silver, Coil Spring Suspension, Tyres 285/55 R 18

These are the symptoms that were discussed on the forum a while ago, if you do a search for hesitation on the forum there are quite a few threads around. There was a service bulletin that recommended an update to the gearbox software. I didn't really suffer from those symptoms but had the update done anyway and it did seem to 'sharpen' up the gearchanges. The problem was that it seemed to work for some people and not for others Cheers Ian

Yep - know about those but had laboured under the misapprehension that these were 'older' vehicles ie 2012 model year and had imagined that the fix would now be part of the new build process...

And the "fix" really doesn't work, you learn to drive round it but it still rears it head occasionally just when you don't need it. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

make sure your foot isn't snagging on the brake ..only got to let your foot slightly touch the brake when changing from brake to acceratory and that will kill the revs,,and shows itself as "hesitation"

Mine is a MY13, so it was still a problem. And the transmission software update did solve mine. I gather some MY12 guys didn't have as much luck. I suspect, as you said, it's been designed to improve fuel economy, in trying to hold a higher gear all the time.
And yes, my symptoms were exactly the same initially; nothing happens, then it goes like the clappers sometimes with tyre squeals for effect. I have to negotiate 2 tight roundabouts close to home, so I was seeing it all the time. Yet some others who say they drive gently don't see the symptoms. Hence I gather you have to ask for the fix, or it will not be applied. Perhaps you do lose out on some fuel economy, hence they don't apply it across the board.
