I write this having had first AA Chap out... Sat in Tescos car park after SWMBO took the D4 out and the EPB appears to have jammed on, I came to the rescue, with info off here in that I removed said cup holders and base plate to see wire loop, pulled hard enough to bend screwdriver shaft, but no 'clunk', so opted for AA.
'Ke'v arrived asked me what the issue was, which was re confirmed to him, as had been done to the call centre, where he took a socket shaft, tried what I did and then pronounced it 'Royally you know what Sir, I'll organise a lift truck for you'
So is there any self help advice as I know wait the two hours whilst SWMBO has had enough of the D4 and headed home.....Mitch
I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception......

Does this work?
Ignition off
Hold EPB down
Ignition on
System resets and releases

Probably too late now (Sorry) but doesn't a 2011 still have the red handle under the cup holders? If so I'm just wondering what you bent your shaft on !!!! ....So to speak.

Red handle under cup holders doesn't release the EPB but releases the Drive Select button.

Yes.
On vehicles with Drive Select there is a red handle under the cup holders and then to access the EPB release wire you need to remove the plastic cover plate (2 screws) and then give a hard pull on the wire with the loop on it.
Don't be tempted to pull the red lever to see what happens as it usually results in the vehicle having to be recovered to the Dealer for a gearbox reset.

What causes in general the epb to jam on. Is it because there is too much clearance at the shoes and the main unit has to pull so much cable in it jams ? I have hopefully recently sorted mine out too much clearance is bad and too little drags and cooks the disc and shoes. Considering how simple a lever and cable were, this system seems like a very expensive high maintenance upD4

Incorrect adjustment and seized shoes are the main causes.
The motor winds the brass rod to it full extent of travel, and jams if left. The motor doesnt have enough torque to unjam itself.
An experienced ear can tell if it is winding too much when applied My D3 Build Thread
