Replacing Heater Plugs
Hi All, my first time on the forum so I'm going straight in at the deep end!
I've been using the forum for a while as a visitor and very impressed with the depth of knowledge on here, so thanks for that
stratstones have had the car for a week to change the heater plugs, they didn't change any but managed to snap 3 of the blighters, but at least they did it for free????
today, if the tool arrives ,(laser 5205) I will attempt to remove the broken ones, I've read the hundreds of threads on this and am quite apprehensive to say the least, wish me luck !
I've managed to change the exhaust crossover pipe ( gearbox out) on the drive, so I'm not easily beaten but this car is trying my patience, I'll keep you all posted with how it goes,

Hopefully they are charging you the book time for replacing the glow plugs and not the real cost when they have to take the body off Mark.

I've given up on using the dealers, I'm doing this myself
Stratstones won't drill them out, they will only work within the rules set by LR, so for them its body off, heads off,
Seems to me it's got to be worth trying all the other methods first before going down that route, if using this extractor kit doesn't work and I have to go down the body off route, I've only lost the price of the tool, if it works I've saved ££££'s, or a few weekends doing it myself ( we've got forklifts at work, so if needs be, body will be coming off there)

Daft question from a non techie but wouldn't drilling them out result in some debris falling into the cylinders?
The only advice I will give you is do not drill to deep on the glow plug tube, mark the depth of your drill so you don't go to far and take your time.

Thanks Flack, there is a video on you tube on how to use the laser tool, I realise it's going to be trickier than in the vid, but all the steps are well explained.
I'd put a link in but I'm a biff when it comes to stuff like that

Seen a few of these video's ..... that's the shortest and a good one D4 Front upgrade/cut back wings n things 'taking a long time but getting there'.

@Flack, removal kit has arrived,
I'm onto the 1st snapped on, however, the supplied sleeves for the 3.5 mm drill bits appear to have too large an external diameter to knock into the plug, to enable drilling out the electrode.
Also the supplied 1/4 " tap , when lined up against a removed plug, it seems to me if I tap the plug out to this size then there won't be any plug left for the mandrel to screw into.???
The plug is 6.7mm in dia and the tap is about 6.2 in dia.!
I don't use the sleeves, just make sure your straight as you drill down...

Yes that should be fine you still have .5 mm wall thickness in the plug, to much and the plug will spread when threaded instead of coming out smoothly.
