Help - Have I got a fuel fault or not?

I am after some advice and help before sinking potentially £100’s into my 2008 TDV6 please. (115k on the clock).

I don’t usually make ultra short journeys in it, but on Tuesday afternoon I drove a mile or so round the corner to work and hour later I set off home. I drove 50 yards to a roundabout and noticed it suddenly wasn’t driving properly. HDC something, engine fault, lowering suspension. I stopped and it also said parking brake fault. I switched off, waited 10 seconds or so and restarted. Everything was fine again and I drove the short distance home without a problem.

I didn’t drive it again until Thursday morning when I was going in for a pre-booked service and hub bearing replacement at my local Indy, which is 8 miles away. The vehicle started fine, but she was a bit rubbish pulling away from junctions in first and did not feel quite right occasionally when driving. There were no other problems though and I arrived at the garage.

They did the service, including a new fuel filter and called me about fault codes relating to the fuel rail pressure sensor switch and some other fault code about fuel pressure. (They also told me that I need both rear wishbones replacing asap, especially because I tow a horsebox).

They said the new fuel filter has improved things, but they did some more test drives and told me it goes into limp mode if pushed (if that’s the right term). They also did some investigations on the internet and have concluded that I need to replace the fuel rail pressure sensor, but this needs several new pipes, etc at the same time, so is looking like around £500. However they are not certain this is the problem and say that if it does not work, we will need to replace the high pressure pump next (I checked and my VIN number is not in the fuel pump recall).

Anyway they didn’t want me to use the vehicle over the weekend, at least not for anything important, like towing the horsebox, but I brought it home because I wanted to drive it myself.

Now the last two start ups have come up with HDC fault, engine fault, system not available straight away, but when I restart a couple of times, these messages stop and the car drives fine. I called my garage, and they said that it is easy to kill her if pushed, so this morning a drove it hard up at the A1(M) - max revs in all gears up to 4 (manual) and cruising at speed in 5 and 6. It drove as sweet as ever and did not fail on me once.

I did ask the garage yesterday for the fault codes, but they said because they use Autologic diagnostics, they don’t get the LR fault codes. Is that correct? BTW I have no reason to doubt this garage’s integrity, They only do LRs, the reviews I can find are good, and they are always very busy and booked out ahead.

More importantly, what should I do please? I don’t want to spend £100’s or even £1000’s on changing components in the hope these faults will eventually clear down, but I don’t want to have a broken down vehicle when towing the horse, or damage it in some way because there is a major fault.

Any advice and tips will be greatly welcomed. Thanks for reading.

How long have you owned it? If a while has anyone ever put any petrol in it by mistake?

That is what is likely to be wrong with mine and needing a new HPFP once I muster up the cash for it! (£800)

Mine starts lumpy when very cold out and smokes under harsh acceleration.

My 10pence worth... Will

Sounds like the garage doesn't really know what to look for, if it needs to consult
The tinternet
And willing to throw parts at it at your expense
I'd find another garage for a second opinion Thumbs Up

Hi. I've owned it a year and I only put Shell V-power diesel in it.

I have been thinking of getting another garage's or an expert's opinion, but I don't sure who to go to round here. We've got a a main dealer in the town, Lancaster Land Rover, but don't know anything about their servicing section.

One of the things I was hoping to find out a bit more about in this thread is fault codes and clearing them away.

There seems to be quality automotive engineers on this forum, but no-one seems to be near enough to me here in Welwyn Garden City. Sad

Going for second opinion

I just had a chat with a Indy in Ware who made a lot of sense and explained some things to me like the HDC fault on start up being the last check in the chain and so possibly a weak battery, etc, I am gonna take it there, but not till week after next.

Any other thoughts are still very welcome thanks.

Mods need to move this into the D3 section, where it will get a better audience.

All I can say is that a lot of posts on this forum showing your symptoms seem to be battery/alternator orientated, check your battery voltage after an overnight stand then charge voltage there are plenty threads that will tell you the voltages you would expect to get.

Thanks - however I am sure I put it in the D3 section, did I not? However I think I put it in Maintenance and Mods (D3), but its now in Technical (D3), so if it has been moved - thanks to the relevant mod, as I could not make up my mind which was the best section to put it in.

Thanks I will do this. I asked the garage yesterday if low battery or alternator issues might be the cause and they said that it won't be that because the electrics are 'alright' and also asked me who told me that it might be this! Their concern, which sounds reasonable, is that that the fuel related fault codes I have that either won't clear, or they come back after clearing (not sure which).

Hopefully I'll know more on the 20th at my second opinion garage, unless the vehicle goes more wrong before.

I checked the voltages this morning with my 25 year old multimeter. The battery shows 12.4v and after start up 14.5v. However I think my meter might be over reading a bit because I checked a new 1.5v battery and it says a bit over over 1.6v! Maybe I need a new one, or perhaps I should borrow my neighbours, although his will be from the 60's!

The first start still gave me HDC fault - system not available, Engine fault and parking brake fault. These messages did not reappear on the second start.

Still a mystery then, by the look of it?? I'll drive her later.

i would get yourself a good quality injector cleaner i had this problem before and fault codes relating to fuel supply and lower pressure and i think its todo with the content on bio fuel in the fuel your using over time it can block the fuel delivery valve and pressure switch causing the fault you have said. you may need to do it a few times if that does not sort it you may be looking at a new high pressure pump.

If you get across to the Chelmsford area on your travels, I can read your fault codes for you.

Thanks for the kind offer. Chelmsord might be a bit out of my way, but I will bear it mind.

PS Has anyone else found that the quote option is not available on the last post in a thread?
