Electronic battery cut off solenoid.

Met up with my father at a rainy Fort William campsite this weekend and was checking over his newly acquired D4. The car is a 2011 xs and pretty clean throughout. However, upon checking the battery compartment it appears to have some sort of electronic battery disconnect fitted to the negative battery clamp (basically a solenoid controlled switch of sorts).

On the positive battery lead it looks like a Hall effect sensor or similar taped to the lead and the battery vent heads down to a control box too. Is this standard d4 fit and if so why?

Sorry no pictures as phone signal abysmal! Will get some up tomorrow evening.

Andrew,

See below, its a pyrotechnic device to cut off power during a crash.
Quote from the manual below:

"The battery terminal posts allow for the battery cables to be connected with clamp type connections. The battery positive terminal uses a pyrotechnic attachment, which detaches the battery cable in the event of a crash of a severity to trigger the airbags. For additional information, refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) (501-20B Supplemental Restraint System)"

Barry

That answers the positive terminal question but the one on the negative one is different and is connected by a number of cables to a terminal block.

Is not on the D3 but is on the D4.

Hi Andrew,

Here is the quote from the manual on the negative terminal:

"The vehicle is fitted with a transit relay. This is a disposable device and NOT for use by the customer. This relay fits in series with the battery and ground; it disconnects the battery from the vehicle's ground and thus eliminates quiescent current during delivery. The relay must be removed before delivery to the customer.'

Says that it should be removed before delivery though.

My BMW X5 has a similar setup on the positive terminal.

Makes sense given the D4s different electrics.

Hi Andrew,
Terminals on my 2011 RRS are the same as they were on my D3 which has now gone?
Don't understand the comment on different electrics?
At the battery terminals?

D3 has a block on positive only. D4 has one on positive and negative terminals.
D4 made some changes to the charging system I believe which would explain the battery monitor on the negative terminal.

Nothing like that on my D4, so must be model year specific. The small gauge wires coming from it look like the BMS though, so I am with Wiggs.

Thanks for all the replies, was just concerned that his newly aquiired d4 had some unknown modifications! After driving the d4 is it normal to want to chop the d3 in for one? Laughing
