Well, following sterling work by Geoff today, I now have V8 brakes on the front of my oil burning Discovery Very Happy As I was at work whilst they were done, I couldn't get any sexy photos of the new kit, so I've had to settle for tantalising glimpses through the wheel spokes:

And this is what they replaced Shocked

I've only been for a brief spin this evening, but they seem to work fine. I expect they'll need to bed in for a few miles before I see the full benefit though.

Whilst he was here, Geoff also fitted a new bonnet switch for me, which I'm hoping is going to cure an annoyingly intermittent alarm fault. This is the old one, which Guava told me was working fine when they tested it, but I'm not convinced:

Alarm Horn Modification

Through bad weather, dark nights and lack of time, it's been a quiet few months on the Discovery front. Today, that all changed though Smile

First on the list was the horn mod for the alarm. A recent new bonnet switch cured an intermittent fault with the alarm so I now feel safe disconnecting the sounder and using the horn instead!

The existing sounder is located to the left of the brake master cylinder, behind the ABS module:

It has an electrical connector on the off-side that's a bit fiddly to get to. To release, push the little tab up with a small screwdriver and pull:

Two bolts hold the unit down and when removed it looks like this:

I taped up the electrical connector and cable-tied it back to the loom:

Split Charge System

Next was finally fitting a second battery. When I bought the car it was already fitted with a Tmax split charge system so it was just a case of bolting the new battery in place and connecting it up. I chose the Tayna EXV70 Enduroline, which is a 70Ah leisure battery that fits neatly in the space available:

The cover then goes back on neatly:

And finally, a quick test to make sure it all works:

There's already a separate outlet installed in the boot, which'll be handy for the fridge when camping.

Tailgate Strut

Third was one of those jobs that I've been meaning to do for months. Ever since fitting a rear ladder, the upper tailgate has been a bit lazy, so I replaced the strut on that side. It's made quite a difference but I'll probably replace the other one at some point, too.

Spare Wheel Winch Winder

Finally for today, I finally collected all of the bits to make a remote winder for the spare wheel winch. The parts consist of a standard 22mm socket, a 3/8 male to ¼ female converter and a 100mm ¼ inch extension bar. I also bought a ¼ inch ratchet but that proved to be less useful.

Here they are on first fit:

And with the rubber bung cut to fit over:

First seat down:

Both seats down:

The ¼ inch ratchet worked ok but was very close to the floor. As the converter that I used came in a pack of four different diferent sizes, I therefore used a ¼ male to 3/8 female with a larger ratchet, which made for an easier time:

With the rubber mat back in place, I cut a small flap over the winder location, which makes for very easy access:

Hopefully, I’ll never need it!

Nice work Thumbs Up

When you remove the sounder do you need to do anything else for it to use the horn or does it do it automatically.

Cheers

Thanks. None of it is revolutionary, but still satisfying.

The alarm defaults to using the horn with the sounder disconnected. No other changes are needed.

Thumbs Up

Will take it out later. Need to remove the aux battery for something else so will sort at the same time.

Cheers
