Each to their own, you'll have your own bucket list. Just a lot of the suggestions were from down south, with respect, they don't live here.
The Ferry is about £100 from Uig to Harris return with car. No cabin available, but it's only an hour and twenty mins to get there or six hours on a rough day as I found out once. PS they do sail in really rough weather.
For Scrabster to Orkney return, it's £250 ish, depending on if you have a cabin or not, bit longer crossing.
PS the Pentland Firth can be really wild!
Think on when planning, some of the A roads up here are single track and you'd only average 20pmh.

I'd probably spend time in the Borders. Edinburgh is worth a day or two. Maybe pop into Fife and the East Neuk. Up to Aberdeen, across to Braemar, head on into Inverness, down Loch Ness, Fort William and back from there. You'd get a good flavour of the place. If you start adding on the islands and remoter parts, it will become an ordeal and you will remember the journey rather than the places you see.
Looked on the map to locate the places you have mentioned - as I can see you recommend east cost and middle of highlands, while majority of people west cost. Also - is there anything really interesting in Fife, East Neuk and Aberdeen? Honestly I would be more interested in nice views while driving through empty Scotland's roads, than spending time in pubs and on the streets of crowdy touristic places. Don't get me wrong - I'm not arguing what is better as I have no idea about it, but just been trying to find out what kind of activities you prefer I'm aware that sometimes for locals something, that is very interesting for tourists, can be totally out of interest for residents. Looking very much forward to something like this from the link http://www.stevecarter.com/random/other.htm, camp in the evening in any of those places would be thousand times better than sitting in a lobby of a hotel - even with best malts in the whole Scotland Wrapped Satin Yellow&Black; Lovells 2" Gas Legend Kit, OME hard springs. Here's a clip of some of the roads in the far north west of Sutherland, starting in Kinlochbervie and heading south. The last 100 miles aren't as flat as some people seem to think.

All I said was that the landscape starts to flatten out again, which I hope you would agree with after the (at times overpowering) nature of the landscape between (say) Glencoe and Ullapool. Compared to other parts of the UK it is all still very 'lumpy', but the Sutherland landscape has (to me) a softer feel than some other parts of the Highlands. Great stuff Jamieklb What are the mountains in 4:03?
I'm very into photography euangibson, so wouldn't miss this one
Anyone uses Garmin maps? I have CNE2014.3 - MapSource version for planing on my computer - however most of the isles have poor road coverage on the map - is it reality or just the map doesn't reflect the true state?

Poor road coverage is the reality - we tend to go round the mountains rather than over or under them Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE
