I bet 90% for that metal sound and vibration in particular RPMs is the metal pipe connecting RH and LH exhaust headers/ collectors. It is corrugated and dressed in special cloth. That sounds depends on how big the hole is in that thin corrugated metal pipe. Inspect black area of the cloth first where the exhaust smoke can leave the footprint.

Thumbs Up

This may be true in some instances but not in the case I have been writing about. This is supported by the fact that when I drove at steady speed in the 1500-2000 range that the revs oscillate in a bracket of 200-300 revs/min when the car vibrates / shudders. This I can only explain through issues with gear clutch.

Hi joewool and arsi,
Did you have any results in getting the noise out?
My car is showing similar symptoms. Starting with a low buzzing noise when accelerating. Especially around 80 kph. Now it is expanding to more speeds, but still around the same revs. 1500-2500 rpm.
Also I get a 'metallic' light vibration in steering wheel and pedals... It is getting worse and warranty is soon ending, so I am anxious to know if it is a real problem or just part of the lr experience. Neutral
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi Keesiev,

yr symptoms pretty much look like the ones i had. I now have 350.000 km on the odometer and I had these symptoms for the first time @ 225 000 km. I never had the GB oil changed as LR did not recommend it. I had the tranny flushed and the oil filter changed (it comes with the carter) My car stayed free of shuddering for about 75000 km, so I did another oil exchange (by the way ZF indicates oil changes every 80- 100 k) and the shuddering disappeared. Shuddering came back recently so I'm good for a third flush in the near future.

My theory is that when the km's increase the filter gets slowly clogged, the oil may get a bit thicker and of course the pump wears out a bit. All may lead to pressure loss at the gear-clutch @ the 1500 RPM range. If the gear clutch cannot engage properly it seems plausible that shuddering is the result.

Changing oil including the filter costs around 500 € with landrover. It may be a bit cheaper with a ZF specialist.

Cheers,

Hi Jelle,
Thanks for your feedback. I had the oil of the automatic gear box changed and the filter flushed. The specialist who did it, said the filter was 75% poluted. However, I still keep this deep buzzing sound, noticable at 80 kmh. I know it is not the egr, because that sound i can hear at 70 kmh when at steady speed. The one at 80 kmh is under load and might be at or around a gear change. I am going to check that later.
The sound at higher speeds is now gone. I had a bearing replaced yesterday and that did it. Thumbs Up

May be it is just a resonance in the drivetrain I will haveto accept? Confused
