Hi Lew,
I have idle speed vibrations getting worst over the last 15,000km. Just getting to 60K
Would these issue affect idle quality as well? My stealer replaced one of the knock sensors that failed diagnostics which made some improvement and reduced a tendency to regularly near stall but the vibration continues and after 8,000km more of the near stall action has started again, last week in stop start Sydney traffic it triggered an engine fault message from the near stall. Idle speed is still even but vibrations up until over 1200rpm or so persist.

Could be another failed EGR valve. (Exhaust Gas Recirculation).

HI Ianv
The vibration you are experiencing is probably a smooth running issue, if the engine MIL has come on, a fault will most definetly be logged. The vibration we had felt as if a driveshaft/CV joint had failed.
The dealer should be able to read this code and using GTR rectify the problem. As a subscriber to GTR and regular user, it never ceases to amaze ourselves how the dealer techs can't apply basic mechanics and modern vehicles together, even when they have all the information to hand.

Yep, checked the egr suggestion but no rattles or other unwelcome noises coming up off idle. With a petrol vehicle I would be looking for air leaks, checking injectors, plugs and electrical connections. Feels like a minor missfire. I also can't dismiss a possible torque convertor issue.
I'll find out more in the next week or so when it goes back in.

i have D3 auto HSE and i have noticed a noise at these revs too. My car is brand new with only 600 miles. Was thinking of taking to dealer but will give it a few weeks to see if it settles down

having just had my S model for a week (bought with 15,000 miles on the clock / 55 plate) I have also noticed this slightly high pitched vague rattling noise form what appears to be front right, guess it would be worth taking to the dealer, could it be what you guys are experiencing?

I am almost sure, that this is the "whine", which is like the the "whine" in mine. Mine drives like nothing else in the world, and I can live with the sound, as long as it is not a sirius problem. I just want to know, where it comes from. No vibrations in my car.

Make sure the bonnet is
latched on both sides,not just one side.
At 120ks Mine sounded like a train when one side was left unlatched Pete

Hi All,
My Vibrations were cured today. ECU update. Smooth as new and feeling very grunty again.
It had been better with a knock sensor change but is excellent now.

arsi, did you resolve your noise? what's the cure? im suffering similar sounds on mine, no reflash or update do the trick...many months problem and uncounted visits to dealer.
mine is oly in third gear between 1500 and 2500, at full throtle. Dealer is thinking in gearbox swap...i'm not very friend of putting an recon unit...i want my new from new gearbox.
i think that maybe is the torque convertor of an diferrential...but who knows! nobody knows from where is the noise, even LR central tech department tech that go to my dealer to test my car. they updated everything and reset all in the transmission.
result: nothing, same noise at identical RPM.

I do/did? have the same issue : bad vibes between 1500 an 2000 rpm/. most of the posts on the subject point to the auto gearbox and clutch lock up issues. So of I go to the dealer and ZF specialist. Neither of them is convinced it is the gear box or TC. The car switches gears smoothly, there does not seem to be excessive slipping of the TC etc.
Already went through a flush 20.000 k ago but made no difference, if anything it made things more pronounced. I've done 210.000 k before the first ATF change, so an additional flush seems appropriate and I booked her in for another change shortly. I hope that that will be the end of it. Don't fancy to dole out short of 4000€ for swapping a gearbox.
This weekend I did some long due cleaning : the intercooler and the MAP sensor. Both were as filthy as ...
The intercooler was completely clogged up, so probably an efficiency of 2% (and I think it has been for at least 50.000 k as that is how long ago the D3 has taken its last mud bath) It seems that hosing it down does not seem to do the trick.
Anyways took alot of the mud out so that at least there is some "intercooling". (still not more than 50% but I did not have enough time to open up all the clogged fins.
The MAP was complepetely caked in black soot, even though the hole was still open I have been able to extract quite some black soot out of it. (Gas, WD40 and carefyl prodding with thin slivers of rolled up tissue paper)
I took the car out today and to my astonishments the bad vibes seem to have gone. Still early days and it may still come back but I'll keep my fingers crossed.
If it is confirmed by the next 1000 k (next week ore something) I'll work on a theory to explain this. Someone got some ideas?

Some of the problems here sound very much like the rattle I am getting on my motor. It occurs a lot now at low revs and is now there more when changing up the gears, you do need the window open and radio off to notice it but it does make me concious of it driving in public  .

Same here. Done as per the 3rd gear bulletine and reset gearbox adaptives with JLR. Sounds sligtly worse now so it is gearbox or TC related I think. Also did a full reset on all systems which got my FBH sorted. Going to run it SD Transmissions in Doncaster. If they identify a problem its in for rebuild and external tranny cooler too to prevent the glycol issues.

Never have come back to this topic bit after 8 months it's time to give some follow up. All the efforts i have decribed in my previous post helped for,some time but what really did the trick was a complete transmission oil change a second time and changing the transmission oil filter for the first time (the filter is integrated in the carter bottom). This has been done 30 000 km ago and the vibrations have not come back yet. My explanation is that if the tran oil is old and full of filth and when the filter is fairly clogged up that there just is insufficient flow to get enough oil/pressure to complete a gear lock up at 1500 - 2000 revs. Hence the vibrations and shuddering.
