Bogged in sand only two wheels were spinning
Hi all,
Went on my first off road adventure in my disco 3 this weekend and got bogged in soft sand. When I tried to get my self my friend in a supporting car advised only my front wheels were spinning. I had the car in sand mode and tried both high and low range. Would there be a reason why the rear wheels wouldn't engage? I.e. Sensors it's in the rear registered I was bogged?
If so is there a way of triggering all 4 wheels?
Apart from this insident the car climbed without an issue
Could it be that the traction control had stopped the rear wheels from spinning?????In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Down and out's Velar

Difficult without knowing the exact circumstances but traction control is progressive and takes a few seconds of steady throttle input to take effect. Did you try rock-crawl as that always locks the centre e-diff. If nothing at all sent any power to the rear could the e-diff be faulty???

On 19 tyres dropping to 20psi will make a world of difference, i have been in desert dunes with few problems and was fully loaded with exped kit - amazed me. Need to put them back up on-road asap or drive very slowly.

Thanks for the response guys much appreciated.
I did have the DCS turned off and the car was bogged to probably halfway up the wheel. There was plenty of compacted sand around the rear mud guards which I cleared out along with some sand around all four wheels.
I had my tyres down to 18psi and the car was climbing dunes and soft sand with ease the day before. This however was REALLY soft sand. Some guys were running land cruisers on 8!!
I did put the car into rock crawl but with so many people willing to help didn't really have time to explore the option. Will keep in mind for next time though.
I do currently have a HDC fault which I need to get assessed. Was going to buy a IID tool this month rather than take it to a dealer in case it's a nothing type fault. Do you think this could cause the issue?
Would a computer show a traction fault? Presume it would if it tells me when my washer fluid is running low.

Your 4 x 4 info screen should have told you that centre diff was/was not engaged. First time I had similar experience in Chobe Game park my proverbial was fluttering as I had no control over the diffs but found that they did come on when required - first was centre diff, then, when achieving even more sticky and deep stuff the rear diff came in and I had the feeling that I could climb straight up a wall!! Each phase was recorded on the info' screen but I felt it in my backside first with considerable relief. Life always good with a Landy

I have the 2006 without the centre console display. Would it show what diff has been engaged on the dash?

If you have an HDC fault it could well be related as it may be a wheel speed sensor. If the HDC and ETC isn't working then the centre e-diff won't be either

Sometimes a few dabs of the brake peddle (yes the brake) can fool the TC to kick in. Works with a wheel in the air and all drive going to it, should work with only one axle spinning I guess. Worth a try especially if nothing else is working.

What about your steer? The center e-diff unlock automatically when steering angle became greater than a (unknown) value.
If you stuck while under steer it probably went opened - Easy-Lift suspension module 4.0

1. Turn off the DSC
2. Engage low range
3. Select off road height
4. Tyre pressures down to 1.2 bar, and down to 0.8 bar if necessary (if you do this, be careful not to turn quickly, as you will be at risk of de-beading the tyres.
5. Driving in someone elses tracks is actually a good idea in sand, as the sand will be compacted.
6. If you're on a slope, try and steer into the slope (unless like me you get stuck on an ominous edge with some nasty shrubbery at the bottom) - gravity can be a powerful ally, or foe.
7. If you've bottomed out, the car can be put into extended or super extended mode (higher than offroad mode) - this can help quite a bit.
8. If you're still stuck, better get your spade and dig the car out - make sure there is no bulge of sand in front or directly behind the tyres.
9. If you're still stuck at this point, its time for a snatch/strap recovery, if that doesn't work,
10. Go find someone with a winch (very likely to find a Toyota/Jeep driver with a winch in these situations)

And, most importantly, make sure there is no one taking photo's of you having to get into the car via the boot.

I think a few of you are missing the point of the OP, the issue was no drive to the rear wheels. My money is on a faulty sensor which is taking out your HDC (as previously stated) so will also stop the TC working properly and locking up the centre e-diff when it was required.
All the tips are valid but if you have no centre diff lock and only drive at the front you are going nowhere fast once stuck

The problem is likely to be a faulty sensor (yaw, wheel speed), but its best to get it onto some diagnostics - it could also be that the e-diff motor not activating for some reason.
Also, what I previously mentioned about turning DSC off in sand - was probably incorrect if only the front wheels are running - DSC should automatically brake the spinning wheels when on (as well as cut engine throttle which wouldn't be as useful). The problem I have had with DSC is that it often results in your vehicle going sideways into a slope - which very much helped me into the precarious situation above.
