Gearbox linkage, so get underneath and give it some spray grease and exercise the lever. Less likely would be the linkage out of adjustment or the microswitch itself.
Is the shift like knife through butter or a bit more clunky than that?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Thanks for that.
had trouble with this linkage before and fitted new modded pin. It has been a bit grumpy and deep down I thought it might be the culprit
Will let you know result when I have checked it Monday

Hope all goes well.
If you need the linkage alignment instructions:
1 . Adjust the selector cable.
Using an additional wrench, restrain the clamping bush and loosen the locknut.
Move the selector lever on the gearbox fully forward and release it. The lever will return to the 'P' position.
Make sure the selector lever is in the 'P' position.
Push the cable inner rearward then release it.
Tighten the locknut to 10 Nm (7 lb.ft).
2 . Check for correct cable adjustment.
WARNING: The hand brake and foot brake MUST BE applied.
Move the selector lever from 'P' position, check engagement in each position and return to 'P'.
Check that the engine will start in 'P' and 'N' positions and that the engine start is inhibited when drive positions are selected.

Hi Robbie
Checked gearbox linkage as discussed pin virtually seized up. Only renewed 2 years ago.
Cleaned up and copper slipped. Just like new and lever free as a daisy.
Cheers, problem solved
