Yet Another Steering Clonk |
|
Clonk from the front, when reversing with full right lock. Less subtle clonk after this has happened and driving forward with reasonable braking pressure applied. Also slight judder on braking from speed.
So far I know it is not the following:
Track Rods and Track Rod ends (ball joints) - all replaced
Lower Steering column - replaced
Loose brake pad (actually had a pad retaining clip broken/missing and though that was the cure .. alas it was not to be) - replaced
I had an indy take a look and he could find no worn suspensions bushes or proffer any explanation.
With the brakes applied, I have switched between drive and reverse with power and multiple steering angles to see is the CV joints could be at fault .. no sound.
I can however also replicate the clonk to a lessor extent if reversing fast and applying brakes hard ... which sort of hints at a fault in the brakes (coupled with the judder above). Discs and Pads appear to have been replaced not too long ago .. but having a missing clip gives me little confidence in whoever undertook this work.
Anything else I should take a look at?

Front lower rear wishbone bush = front lower wishbones
I had a main agent check mine and they said the same, "nothing wrong", I took it on myself and changed the bushes, even after removing the first arm I was in doubt about them being the culprit, but I went ahead and fitted RRS bushes from AdvancedFactors, completely transformed the car and cured the knock. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Myself and the Indy went over the the wishbones .. as that was both our first thoughts .... but both front and rear, upper and lower are fine (indeed the front lowers and rear uppers had both been replaced sometime in the near past.

Did you have a wheel alignment done recently?
I had a loud clonk coming from the front under certain conditions only (low speed tight turning) after a wheel alignment.
It turned out to be a loose bush or bolt (forgot what my indy told me) on the camber adjusting stuff (the one on an eccentric cam). Most definitely disturbed by the wheel alignment people. Indy tightened everything up and all's been nice and quiet Dennis

Tracking was the only thing the Indy done, but clonk there before and after.

Another vote for checking everything's tightened up properly.
I had the 'clonk on reversing at full right rudder' thing.
This was getting progressively worse, to the point that it would happen reversing or pulling up sharply going forwards in a straight line.
My local garage had a look at the front left suspension and tightened up a couple of bolts ( sorry, forget which ones),one of which required a turn and a half.

Thanks, but I should have mentioned that it did it in all three heights.
I'll bear the grease in mind though
