Our eldest 2 have been invited on the annual school trip. The elder has a heart condition & we would prefer to take the kids 1st (4 in total, others are 9 & 7) first so we can monitor how Yasmin copes with altitude & cold.
This would be a 1st for us, any advice/pointers welcomed. Thinking Christmas break this year. SWMBO hoping North (Norway etc) suggested - coming with a Northern Lights hunt.

Never been to Norway, but imagine it would be very cold at Christmas. I know it must be cold because there is snow, but there is cold and very cold. Some of the other suggestions might be worth a look.
I hope you all love it and no health issues because skiing is a great family holiday. I have many great memories of skiing with my parents, right up to my dad skiing when he was in his 70s.MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff

My daughter was there over new year, first time skier had a great time, had 4 hrs tuition a day for the week at a cost of £150. Boyfriend is a bit ticked off he has been skiing for years, in a week she is as good as he is ==================================

Scandinavian skiing tends to be cold, dark and the hills are quite low and small ski areas (the latter two are not a problem for beginners but the first two are).
Andorra and Bulgaria are cheap (and you get what you pay for). Switzerland is expensive (Zermatt is great at Christmas but not very good skiing for beginners).
France and Italy are still waiting for the resorts to evolve from the 1970's but can have good skiing (do the French instructors still insist on teaching pointless jump turns?).
Western Canada (especially Whistler) would be ideal but it's a long flight to get there.
Scotland could be good for a day trip, but the hired boots and skis are awful and the snow can disappear before you get there.

Did go to Lillehammer many years ago and stayed at the Ilsetra Hotel Skiing was very good, but not cheap for hire of equipment
Went for a clime up the Lysgårdsbakken - where Top Gear did the Mini stunt a few years ago, and its a scary view from the top of the ski jump!
One of our party went on the olympic bobsleigh run where you can pay to have a ride down in the Bob, damaged his back and had to be airlifted off and flown back to the UK on a special flight
Still go to Norway a bit but not for skiing - and its still expensive, especially drinks and food
Another for the list is Slovenia, as its very cheap but good quality from what i have experiencedMust stop buying shiny toys....

Andorra is great for a family First trip and yep it is a lot cheaper. Which in a way is nice as you don’t feel under pressure to ski 12 hours a day to get your moneys worth. Slopes are limited compared to Courcheval but a quarter of the price.
They also do sledging at night and have one or two nice restaurants but nothing overly crazyJames favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

That would be my choice too - having taught about 8 beginners here over the last 20 years or so.

There is good dry slope at Sheffield, ideal for a taster before you go, it's one thing I am glad I learned to do, it's an unbelievable experience. It's worth going just for the atmosphere and to ride on the cable cars. Just don't go to far away first time you go and keep within your capabilities.It can when others can't,

Why not do a short trip up to scotchland to see how she goes with the snow and cold etc first ? There’s ski resorts up there this time of year isn’t there ?Jarrod

I know you want Norway for the Northern lights... But if you change your mind and look At Italy. We went to Livigno years ago it’s in the very north of Italy. It’s a duty free area and the ski resort is a large town with a good few Duty Free shops and restaurants. The baby ski slopes are straight in front of the town and you could ski to the balcony of our hotel for lunch or a coffee from the baby slopes. I’d have to say it was the best place we ever went skiing
Now the bad bit..... as it’s so far up the mountain it’s a 4-5 hour bus journey from Beragmo airport not sure how far it is from other Italian airports or airports in Switzerland as it’s on the border.

Last year We Flew to Trondheim in Norway, hired a car and drove to Sweden, (only about 2.5 hours), we stay in Are, its a great place, mainly full of swedes, friendly people, not too expensive and great slopes.
They have a great child area/ slopes etc, our kids were 10 and 7 at the time and loved it, admittedly they have been skiing for years but there were some very gentle slopes and some more challenging ones. There's a massive gondola to get to the top and you can come back down on it to.
Are is on a lake which freezes in the winter, so we went snow mobiling and dog sledding etc.
As you can see they didn't have a suit to fit my lad
