Towing Hitch

From my perspective - I am definately in the market. My Disco doesn't arive until sometime in August and I won't need a hitch till a little later (but if it's a case of a batch purchase I will count myself in).

I need to be able to connect a Treg type coupling for towning an off-road camper trailer and the base of the Treg hitch needs to be approx 500mm from ground. I don't really care if it allows the spare wheel to be removed or not, as I'll have a rear wheel carrier (and anyway, the standard unit doesn't allow the spare wheel to be removed). Ideally it should not reduce departure angle and have some flexibility for mounting systems. It is probably best if the unit is readily detachable, but if it's bolted on (like the SA unit) that wouldn't concern me too much.

Cost is not a primary issue (Leigh W's figure of around $500 seems reasonable), but let's see how that pans out. At the end of the day, I need to purchase something if I want to tow my camper trailer again!

Cheers,
Martin

I we get enough takers it could be well below the $500 mark. What we are looking at will retain the departure angle (may be affected when toungue is attached), allow the spare wheel to be removed, give flexability of couplings and coupling height by inserting various tongues and be pretty enough for a RRS. Very Happy
It will need to be bolt on; but only three bolts. One bolt may need the trailer socks to be removed but we can work on that.
It depends what HR are doing and what their ETA is.

Before you order - for about $500 - Hayman Reese could sort the problems we have in Aust - with a proper type -3 tow hitch.

It's still a couple of weeks away...

Down side with the HR option, which will be very neat - and it will work with a long range tank in place - downside - well, it won't work with the spare underneath... to do it neatly, HR say there is just not enough room behind the bumper, on the chassis, with the spare wheel there.

Yes - I do know a source of wheel carriers - but this is not about that...

HR did design a tow bar for caravanners, but that was woeful for any off-roading (but did fix the issue of using load distribution hitches). It's about a neat, recessed and out of the way hitch design that does not compromise off-road performance...

I've posted a pic (from my phone only):

cheers - feedback welcomed!

Tow Hitch

Well it looks like what we're looking for. Simon. do you know how it all comes together? Are they actually going in to manufacture with this?

If it doesn't work with the spare tyre underneath, that's not a problem for me - all the more reason for a spare wheel carrier Smile Off topic - my Paj sold last weekend, so it really is all happening now!

Cheer,
Martin

Maybe we're ending up with 4 options here for towing:
- for most flexibility, ability to remove hitch, and when it's not there, max daparture angle - the OEM kit
- for caravanners, who's primary need is the ability to use load distribution hitches, but off-road is not a requirement - the HR vsn 1.
- for off-road towing, but requiring keeping spare underslung - the SA unit from BRS.
- for off-road towing, spare out from underneath, the HR vsn 2. Can put spare on roof too...

Feedback for Hayman Reese - indicated they'd build the prototype week after next - any idea on how many might be interested?

cheers,

Simon

Good point Lex - where are you based? HR would need to check on specs/dimensions of the Kaymar rear bumper.

Cancel that question - you're in Toowomba - I'll get HR to work direct with Kaymar in Melb.

Hi. I am driving a Dsco 3 with a 6 meter coromal caravan. Although the caravan is not off road the coupling on the caravan is higher than 'standard'. It would be good if HR produced a couple of options

If I had to make a choice I would want first of all a higher hitch receiver with the ability to use the weight distribution hitches. I was going to buy a kaymar or similar set up for the spare so don't mind if they need the spare wheel space. (The problem with HR version 1 is that when I put on the weigt dist'n set up I get very little ground clearance and I would still be ripping up lawns as I go over gutters)

I also tow a tinnie on a trailer with small wheels but could cope with this by using a different hitch/ball

I'll check with HR if the high/recessed off-road vsn of their hitch will take a load distribution hitch.

cheers,

Simon
