Anderson Plug?

So, it turns out that the D3 I picked up last week has a 2 pole connector, or an Anderson plug by the tow bar.

Now I pull caravans, and I've used regular electrics (which the D3 has) before... But what uses does the Anderson plug have?

I've seen wiring diagrams around the forum that have included multiple Anderson plugs!

If it is wired directly to the battery maybe he always parked nose in and was paranoid about not getting the jump leads to reach Laughing It is also possible he used it to power working lights.
 So far Fiona has:
TRC front winch bumper / GG AT tyres
Warrior 9500s winch / Aux Fuel tank
Mantec sump guard / Kaymar rear bumper w/swing away
RI D2 light pair / de-cat exhaust
RI 10in flood/spot bar / LR puddle lights
Optima yellow top / Prospeed tree/rock sliders
Spilt charge system / Light guards

Hi,
could be used to power anything really, our company cars use to use same set up to power a hydraulic crane and a 12v winch on a trailer.

may be worth checking if it is live with ing off and putting some sort of isolator in line.

Thumbs Up

Tow hitch mounted winch?
Trailer mounted electric winch?
Jumping other cars?
Battery charging?

Lots of reasons they may have put it in.

Have you checked to see if you have an aux battery? It could be an extension of a split charge system like a Traxide setup? Just a thought Thumbs Up

If the last owner was another caravan/trailer person who camped off electrics it could have been to charge camping battery. As the Anderson connector will charge the battery a lot faster than the 2.5mm in the normal tow socket.

That was my first thought! But unfortunately not! Big Cry

I'm currently looking into auxiliary batteries and changing methods... There's a lot of threads on here, but it's just getting all the information straight in my head! Confused

Ideally I'd like the 2nd battery tucked away in that neat little space under the bonnet and maybe on a split charge system...?

(I recently had my alternator go, and seeing the battery loose voltage and eventually bring the car to a stand still made me think.... I sometimes drive up in the middle of nowhere when I go shooting, there's not even phone reception. I'd hate not to have some sort of back up!)

The 2nd battery should fit in the compartment on the opposite side of the main battery. There is some recessed screw threads for an original battery holder too.

There are loads of split charge options. National Luma, T-Max etc. All have pros/cons. Price is what really differentiates them.

Have you checked if the connectors actually go somewhere? Hopefully they still go to the engine bay battery box.

Front to back, it's a very neat job! They do connect back to the cranking battery.

I think it's the amount of options out there that is getting me so confused on which system to go for! When I search, I always end up on the traxide site... But I need some UK sites, with UK prices!

I shopped around and went for the t-max and bought off of ebay.

On my D3 I connected the Anderson to the spare battery as I didn't want anything connected to the main battery so that I always had power to start the car.

Did your aux battery top up your main battery, or was it simply used for plugs and accsessories?

The aux battery powered any accessories. Anderson connectors/additional 12v sockets.

There is a manual switch on the split charger to link both batteries together if needed.

When the engine is started the split charger detects the increase charging voltage and automatically connects both batteries so they both charge as the engine runs.

The manual switch is good in winter if your main battery looses charge you have two to start the engine
