Left Side A-Pillar Dents - Urgent Advise Needed
Hi,
Two days ago I bought my 2006 D3 and upon getting it home noticed water ingress to the passenger side, water in the footwells.
I took the car to Brooklyn 4x4 for advise and they have identified the fault as the A-Pillar being dented which has caused the window to not seat cleanly. See photo.
I called the dealer I bought it from who has three other D3's and they have checked all their cars and report that they are all the same, in fact mine is not the worst!!! (They don't know how to send me a picture)
Please can anyone on this forum confirm either way. Are all D3's dented on the A-Pillar or is my car one to get a refund on ASAP?

no, all D3s aren't dented like this. my D3 was perfect when I stripped it.
it looks like someone has taken the trim off to change a windscreen and then just tried to bash the trim back into place rather than line the lugs up and "clip" it into place.
first thing is to get some new lugs and get those fitted to stop the leaking, they only cost a few pence.
cant see from the photo (or remember) if the there is a hole in the pillar in the centre of you photo where the dent isDuncan

Never seen that or anything like it. One suspects accident damage and I would be concerned about residual strength as a result. You are on the potential path of returning the car…. good luck.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Looks like those dents are from more than just trying to bash the trim back into place.
I'd be asking some more serious questions if I were you!

All I am looking at is how flush the windscreen is at the top (as it should be) to how proud of the a-pillar it is near the top (not correct). The fact that the gap changes from the lower part of the a-pillar to the top strongly suggests accident damage to me.
Photos can be misleading but I would be measuring the car against the point-to-point dimensions.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I have no knowledge on techy stuff ... just enjoy the site and people like Robbie have amazing knowledge and are so helpful
Just hope all is ok .... some comments I have picked up in the last few months ..... a LR screen has the symbol on .... some after market ones haven't so that be a way of checking if the screens been replaced ....
In the meantime there was an A Pillar update kit which costs less than £15 which may help with the water ingress in the meantime ....
It may help a little bit D4 Front upgrade/cut back wings n things 'taking a long time but getting there'.
D4 rear upgrade - Narpys helped with that bit
Flack for problem solving and D4 Bluetooth Install/ D4 Heated Steering wheel with Flappy paddles n BBS enabling kit
Disco Mikeys work - Serviced, EGR blanking and 4x4 software upgrade, 3 flash indicators.
B.A.S - FBHIC. Uncle Rays spare wheel protector. Beanie Silver Black badges.

There's nothing structural about them though..... underneath the skin (which has the dents and are covered by the plastic cover) there is UHS steel structure.

Rich, I agree that the top skin of the body panel is thin but at the inner edge of the pillar the misalignment looks to almost the entire thickness of the screen seal. I'm not sure how you get a good seal in these circumstances and the screen itself does provide some of the rigidity.
I hate judging these things from photos but it is in my 'get it looked at' category. Any chance of a photo with a to-the-edge ruler against the a-pillar and the edge of the windscreen at its highest point?

Agree Rob it does need to be looked at with a better view tbh ...the UHS structures run as one piece either side across the tops of the doors and about two thirds down each A pillar. It's fairly unlikely that it's suffered any major accident damage as the UHS cannot be reformed once bent ...but I agree it needs to be checked over ...if it does turn out to be just a couple of dents caused by over enthusiastic beating down of the cover and there was no other effect on anything e.g. a leak ... then I probably would let it ride. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I just took the car to lr in Southampton. I imagine they felt sorry for me as they did a free inspection.
The technician said that the A-Pillar is fine and that they see a huge number with dents in the skin.
He believes that the water is coming through the sunfoof drains, possibly blocked or tube come off.
He also said that they could reseal the screen, which he assures me is a replacement, for £250. He also said that it is cheaper to claim for a screen on insurance.

When my screen was replaced it was autoglass that pointed the dents out before they started as they didn't want me to think it was them. I too was concerned and spoke to LR about it when it was in there for warranty issue and they said the cause was the same. Transit Custom LWB

after 3 windscreen changes, mines dented to however has leaked once....when the windscreen was fitted like yours ie miss-aligned, its too proud on the top edge
as a result of mine not being seated correctly, it got hit with a stone in the lower black coloured area and cracked straight away.
Best advice, get it refitted...will last longer, not leak and also as part of the vehicles structural integrity (as the windscreen is) it will not pop out if yer roll the car

Dents aside part of the problem is the trim is broken. Look at the photos, there is a circle of foam at the op of the pillar, this has a cross section located in the middle of the circle of foam. Now look at your trim at the top and ypu will see wher an alignmet pin has snapped off the uper part of the trim. So new trim and clips needed. MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange
