Ticking on start up
Hoping someone can help me with a ticking noise i get when i start the engine, it dosent last for long and sometimes its not there at all. at first it only happened when the engine was cold but now i can drive several miles, get the engine up to normal operating temperatures, stop, turn the engine off, leave for a few minutes, restart and it ticks again. my local said it was EGR valves so i had them replaced but no difference.
Any ideas anyone please.
Regards Harry.

I think most TDV6s tick for the first few seconds after starting. I believe it's the tappets. They typically quieten down as soon as the oil supply is restored to them.
The EGR valves do also tick but they typically tick when you switch the engine off. This is a much louder ticking than the tappets (and slower - about twice per second on mine).
Somebody will be along in a moment to impart the good news that your injectors are about to self-destruct.

Biffysun, it does sound like an engine tick, whats 2SO?
Woolmeister, it does sound like the Tappets & like you say typically quieten down after a few seconds or so.
Is there nothing that can be done, do you know?
Regards Harry.

Sorry! penny just dropped. 2 Stroke Oil, Yes already do that. 100ml per 20ltrs of BP Diesel. ( i only ever use BP as i used to work as a fuel tanker driver ).

Re. first start tick, tick, tick - I've had my current D3 for the best part of 4 years and it's always done it so I guess I'm resigned to it.
Mine definitely sounds like hydraulic tappet noise, a bit like some of the old Ford CVH engines from the 80's, but only for the first few seconds, cold start or hot restart.
I regularly use 2SO (2 stroke oil added to the fuel,) which of course gets nowhere near the tappets and makes no difference to that particular noise. I've also used TSL engine oil additive and more recently Activ8, both of which made little if any difference.Clive

Thanks crwoody.. i think thats that then, just have to live with it i guess. As long as theres nothing about to drop off or break up, i guess i can relax a bit.

Mine does it as well definitely goes as soon as oil pressure rises, shows how quite the engine is generally that you are hearing it the petrol v8' s used to do it but you never really heard it until the hyd tappets were carbonated from lack of oil changes and began to anvil.the engine then needed an overhaul.

2SO makes a difference to the engine noise IMO although mine does, and always has, ticked a bit on start up, I presume as stated above, awaiting oil for the hydraulic tappets

I've heard that a few times on other diesel engines. Turned out to be a loose injector. The 'tick' was just compression blow by that disappears when the engine warms up and things expand. Tightening them cured it. Even a loose spark plug in a petrol engine can sound like a worn camshaft.
