can't get sdv6 filter out of the housing :-(

I can't work out where exactly the 'tube' needs to go to release the oil filter, or exactly where are the 4 clips, and whether they push inwards or outwards, any help or guidance much appreciated please, as I'm completely stuck here.

Please see photo - are those the clips? (circled in red), and does the tube need to fit in the gap (where the red arrow is) to release them?

If all else fails , would it be possible to just tear the filter apart using pliers and pull it out piece by piece?

No clips on mine??

Mine doesn't seem to have any clips (2013 model) -unless I already released them..see photo) but the filter won't budge. Is it possible the changed the design to make it even more impossible to remove the filter!!

Any comments/help to get me out of this mess very welcome please.

if your trying to remove the oil filter then they just pull out of the black cap I find an exhaust spring puller for my motorcycle works great some use the key for lifting a drain cover works but either way a good yank usually gets it out then you fit new filter in the housing and refit/torque the black cover/cap
 please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick,thankyou

Very Happy Thank you so much!

Since it was going to take several days for delivery of a motorcycle exhaust spring puller like you suggested, I made a DIY tool out of an old-fashioned (very strong) wire coat hanger (photo below for any others coming here)

I put the widest part of my filter housing (very gently!) in the slot my Black&Decker workbench to hold it while I pulled. First I tried to slide my DIY tool down the outside of the filter housing and turn it 90 degrees to get it underneath the filter, but I couldn't get it to hold. In the end, the tool gripped near the top of the filter, and a sharp tug pulled it swiftly out.

I never did find the 'four clips' mentioned further above. Mine is D4, Oct 2013, SDV6, maybe they changed it at some stage....

Can the oil be drained from the sump ?

I hate this idea of sucking it out any sludge (not that there should be any) would stay in the sump then I guess.
I looked into this and it seems the extraction method in fact removes more oil and sludge than removing just the sump plug, yes I found that difficult to believe.

I have changed the oil and filter. Put in 5.5 ltrs of oil and started it up. Ran it for nearly a minute and the RED triangle remained lit, how long does it take for the oil to get round?

Red triangle remained lit - because the bonnet was open Big Cry

My pump has arrived, I am waiting for the oil now. For the filter do we care who is the manufacturer if I am changing every 6000 miles? The clips in the filter apply for the 3.0 SDV6?

Did it today after lots of hassle trying to get C1 oil with internet sites claiming they have it in stock but in fact haven’t. Anyway, extraction pump first time - great. I joined two tubes together with gaffer tape to have the pump on the floor. The filter housing was tight though, for a moment I thought it was left hand thread but it wasn’t - a breaker bar helped. Filter locked in the cage as others have described so screwdriver under lip of filter and wedge it out and it pops off. I got 5.5 litres out, so maybe not all but as it is an oil change between services I can live with that. I also know they drop the oil from below at the service. All in all a satisfying 30 minutes.
