Quick couple of questions....Low power mode and FBH
Hi all,
Had a little problem this morning, got into car after being in town for a few hours, noticed that I had no sound on radio, CD and no Sat Nav display, car also labored when I started her. Also noticed "Low power mode" message displayed. NO battery light on dash!
Got home and disconnected battery for 10 mins, and everything came back to normal....I also checked the battery:
- Battery disconnected = 12.72 volts
- Batter connected = 12.51 volts
- Engine running = 13.87 volts......checked again after 2 mins running = 13.85 volts.
No burning smell or anything......what are your thoughts, just one of those things?
Even though voltmeter says battery is OK, I've left it on trickle charge and will do so overnight........oh yes, last week or so I've only really been doing short journey's........so may help explain my issue
2nd question, when bonnet was open and I was fiddling, I touched the FBH exhaust and is was very hot....temp was about 11 degrees outside, so why would the FBH be on? I thought it only came on at 5 degrees or lower?
Cheers guysIggy/Ieuan

I'm pretty sure the fbh is always hot due to heat transfer from the engine coolant...
Have the “low power“ issues gone? I had low power mode when listening to music via the aux input, and having to have the hu volume quite high to compensate for the low volume of the iPud... Doesn't do it when listening at “normal“ volumes...flickr

Check the voltage in the morning before you start the car. This will ensure no surface charge and show what state your battery is in before being used for starting. Currently your figures look ok unless the results are false due to surface charge.
The battery light is actually a warning caption for the alternator. Given the failure modes of the alternator it is not even a good indicator for that.
The FBH exhaust has low heat capacity and I would be surprised if it was hot due to coolant alone.
So that just leaves the alternator output - this looks to be too low, especially in the cooler weather.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
Robbie, please explain the meaning and effects of "surface charge".

When car batteries are being charged they cannot complete the chemical reaction quick enough. As a result most of the charging activity occurs on the surface of the plates leaving them with a slightly elevated voltage that is not representative of the true state-of-charge (SoC). To remove the phenomena you can partly discharge the battery by switching on a load for a few minutes or allow the battery to rest for a few hours.
Using a voltmeter to test batteries is a bit crude (it is not what I use when testing batteries) but with a few precautions it is ok.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
