Weird rattle.....

It just started without any other symptom...
I have a weird noise that sounds like a squeaky gate, intermittent, only when I turn to the right, going forwards.
Electronic handbrake OK
Suspension OK....at speed on all roads
Brakes A-OK
It comes & goes.....sounds like like something swinging & squeaking...?
Any ideas gents ?

My front left wheel bearing made a similar noise when it was fubar'd...at its worst turning right. As suggested above that seems like a good starting point Thumbs Up

the noise....

Is definately from the rear & the passenger side.....two pairs of ears
If it is the wheel bearings.....do you have to do both & approx what cost & is there anything else to do at same time ?
Thanks guys

No need to do both at the same time, genuine retail price is £60+ vat roughly for parts, you will need a press to change rear wheel bearing if DIY !

Stone in the brakes? Try reversing and a sharp brake application to dislodge it.

You've not just fitted new rear discs have you??had this issue twice now and the first one was a Censored to find. It was the discs catching the lip on the handbrake back plate, not the outer one but the one closest to the shoes!!

I had a squeak/rattle in my D4 at the rear, which was hard to locate. After trying/adjusting many items I put some WD40 on the lower tailgate catches and it cured it.

Worth a try...?

Cheers

Hi,

Does it go away when you apply light pressure to the brake?? seized rear brake caliper was the reason for the squeak from my near side rear wheel, started intermitent and gradually got worse.

brakes make no difference...

If i apply the brakes.....lightly.......awkward but possible when cornering.....it.makes no difference
Whats itlikely to be front or back wheel bearings. ?
Which is the easiest to sort ?
If its a front one do these have to be done in pairs ?
Is 80ks the life of these .......normal ?
Thanks guys
Bruce

They don't have to be done in pairs
I can only describe the sound mine made...I thought the metal trim was loose on my side-steps...a tinny-sounding rattle when cornering to the right....jack the car up,put your hands at 12 and 6 o'clock and check for play......if there's no play it still doesn't mean its not the wheel bearing, that's just the usual indicator Thumbs Up

The squeak I had turned out to be the rear brake pads sticking in the sliders - too much accumulated rust and rubbish.

Not sure how a wheel bearing could generate a squeak unless it's allowing enough run-out for the pads to touch the disc?

Cured !

The genius's on here who said wheel bearing were exactly right
Was the near side front one.....
All the others checked out OK
There was one other "symptom".....the steering was a very slight bit wooly at dead centre
It felt as though the wheel was slightly offset...
When car returned "fixed" it is dead straight & feels precision now...
Many many thanks to those who came back with the possible causes....
The weird noise was the front brake backing plate rubbing
The fault was found & fixed in just hours.....so no major damage done ?
