Just had the truck in for its 2 year service / 27,000 miles and the dealer called to advise that all pads and discs needed replacing. This is my second set of pads, but the first set of discs that I've had to replace, because they are badly lipped. Can anyone advise whether this is "normal" wear. Could the squealing that I've had from the park brake for a long time now been a factor in making the discs wear faster.
Thanks everyone - did a search but couldn't find any posts.

My discs have done 72000 miles, on 4th set of pads now. They have a lip, but no judders or score marks.

Brake pad & disc wear is dependent upon the types of roads driven & the amount of contamination - road dirt, spilt fuel, road salt plus offroading detritus can all shorten the life of the discs and pads. The park brake shoes sit inside the discb so are unlikely to reduce the service life of the disc surfaces

My Blue D3 is close to 90,000 miles and is still on her first set if disc's, they do have a lip and thats it. I think she is on her 3rd set of pads and these were put in before the 2nd set were completely worn out, the reason for this was I wanted new pads to go to Morocco.
10forcash do you know what is the minimum disc thickness is before the disc's need replacing
Phil B the squealing is nothing to do with the disc's or pads.In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Just put my 7 month old disco 3 in for its first service only to be told that the pads need replacing at a little over 16000 miles. Is this normal? Personally think that the pads should last considerable longer than this! What are other peoples experiences? Are there better pads to put on my disco?

As TFC has indicated there are so many variables in determining the life of pads or discs that there is no way one can define the lifespan accurately. If you are a heavy \ late braker then it naturally follows they are going to wear out faster when combined with all the other conditions. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
The other thing to consider is that "better" brake pads normally kill your discs a whole lot quicker.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

done 18k on mine with about 6mm left on the 1st set of pads and the Meaniemobile is never driven in any manner other than what I would describe as 'enthusiastic', must be the auto/manual gearbox thing again!
Blue, I'll give you a shout when I need a new clutch...... Oh, but I won't, ever! I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I think pads and disks are seen as easy money by dealers. I was told that the disks and pads needed changing on my Disco II at its 56,000 mile service - they will not last until the next service.
I checked them and they looked fine. The next few services I had done at an independent garage and they did not mention the disks, finally sold at 80,000 miles with original disks and only one change of pads.
Just had my wifes Micra serviced and had the phone call - pads are 85% worn and will not last until next year. I took it home and took a look, they were no more than 40% worn and as they are the original pads and the car is 6 years old I guess I have at least another 6 years to go.

When a garage tells me "won't last to next service", I reply "I'll keep an eye on them"

I had a car that lasted a full six years after all four shocks mysteriously started leaking...I told them to cancel the four new tyres I was in for as the car was no longer worth it, and drove it in at the next garage along the road and had my new tyres there instead.
I'm still not sure if it's garage policy to up their revenue or the result of sales staff peer pressure to have a laugh and stiff a customer - my rule is, if in any doubt, walk and get a 2nd and 3rd opinion. Then do the work yourself Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?
