[For Sale] Detachable Tow Ball Securing Kit
I had the problem with my D3 removable tow ball working loose and rattling and clanking during towing.
Many Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover owners have reported this issue with the detachable tow ball or tow bar. The ball can be loose and often work loose when towing. The spring loaded locking knob works loose and the tow ball can rattle and clank when towing.
Land Rover advise that as long as the ball is locked, the taper pin can not retract enough to allow the tow bar to drop out but this loosening can be annoying, concerning and causes excessive wear to the tow ball and socket worsening the problem over time.
I have designed manufactured and fitted a good number of the securing kits shown. They work by clamping the tow bar in place tight in the locked position hard against the taper of the housing. This kit works brilliantly and gives peace of mind and also makes the ugly socket look better.
It should be noted that this system only fits the type of tow ball pictured and is not a replacement or repair for an un-serviceable and or faulty tow ball and is not rated to any specific capacity.
Unfortunately the cost of manufacture of these was a bit more than the canny LR owner wanted to pay so I dont have any more available.
As such I have included below an engineering drawing of the plate so if you fancy making one yourself, it will be spot on. Good Luck!
Manufactured from 8mm thick Stainless Steel with Stainless Steel bolts.

Nice idea, would be even better if it included some security bolts- could also market it as an antitheft device

Thanks for the thumbs up!
The kit does make the removable tow ball a pretty permanent fixture as it is not easy to keep putting on and off. The knob should still be fitted and in the locked position before this plate goes on so even if a tea leaf did get the plate off, they should not be able to remove the ball.

Apart from the fact that stealing the tow bar takes less time than going for a dump, even when the lock is engaged
So yeh, some locking nuts would be pretty useful!2014 D4 XS

Detachable tow bar securing kit
Hi Geosdad,
I am interested in purchasing one of your kits for the new price of £15. Unfortunately I cannot send you a PM for some reason so could you please send a PM to me with your contact details.
Thanks
Brian
Looking at the design, it's attached using the holes that you attach the Breakaway Cable to, so you would really need to get yourself another Bearkaway Cable Receiver as looping the cable over the Towball is not best policy. No big deal as you would use one of the bolts that secures the plate.

Hi geosdad,
PM sent. Don't trust removable tow bar, this would provide extra security if bar did come loose. Was looking at fixed bar but only tow tin tent when going on holiday so will try this first. (no play just handle moves even when locked)
Thanks.
