D4 Tyre Size

I have just bought some 20" wheels for my D4 and I,m after new tyres.
On my D3 I ran Cooper Zeon LTZ size 285/50/20 which I loved.
Now I know ronp ran the same tyre on his D4 just with extended steering stops which I have.
What sizes does anyone else run on 20" D4?
I've read the thread about it upsetting the gearing as its an auto and wondered if anyone else had any bother?
Would I have the same trouble of the tyres hitting the chassis if I used 275/50/20?
On my D3 I laser cut some 6mm plates that sat behind the wheels and this made them clear the top of the suspension strut. This isn't an issue with the D4 but without the steering stops they foul the chassis end.

I'm a big fan of the Wintrac 4's. Just started my second set last week. I use them all year and the first set lasted almost 40,000 miles! (2 summers and 1 winter) Admittedly, that's almost all long distance motorway stuff, but certainly the longest lasting tyre I've ever had.

Obviously, they feel great in the winter and easily out perform the Pirelli ATR's I had previously, I've had no problems in the summer, but don't think they are quite as sure footed as the OEM Pirelli Scorpions on warm damp/wet roads. My feeling is I'd rather have a winter tyre in the summer than a summer tyre in the winter!

Road noise is excellent - much quieter than ATR's. I'm running +4psi all round.

I don't do much off-tarmac, and although the Wintrac's are labled M+S, I'd only rate them as average on mud and damp grass. I've never got it stuck, but nowhere near as good as the ATR's for this.

The only thing to look out for is what happens toward the end of their life... the performance in the wet and susceptibility to aquaplane suddenly gets a lot worse. The surprising thing is this happens way before the tread get anywhere near illegal. It didn't bother me, as after 40k miles I'd thought I'd had my money's worth, but be prepared for throwing them away with quite a bit of tread left!

Needless to say... I bought a second set and I'm looking forward to snow! Thumbs Up

I got mine from AJS4x4 - sponsor on here.
Not sure how often Andy's prices move... worth giving him a ring.
My set of 4 a week ago were cheaper than the same thing in spring 2012! Thumbs Up

allforus, I've just noticed from your gallery that you might pull a tin-tent? I should say that I've found the Wintrac's quite average on wet grass. Luckily the D4 manages most problems brilliantly but it's not what these tyres were designed for!

So i put on the GG AT 275/45/20 but im not impressed with the look.
The wheels look too small...
What do you think?
Surely the 20mm extra in a standard tyre can't make all the difference?
It does also feel lower or am i being stupid..

yes, I agree. I tried that wheel/tyre size combo on my first D3 and thought exactly the same. Its as though there's not enough tyre for the wheel.

So then I went to 295/45x20's, which looked great, but that extra tyre width pulled the car all over the road on worn road surfaces, so settled on 265/50x20's, which fill the arches nicely, and give a nice ride due to not being to low a profile.

Here on last D3:

And these will be back on the D4 after the winter.

Ahh, see from the for sale section - given up on them already. Thumbs Up
