All the things you have mentioned Dave also make me think don't get one and leave it to people who know what they are doing... but another part of me thinks but then I won't learn...

Perhaps the biggest advantage of using a forum sponsor to do your reprogramming / enabling is that they bring their experience with them. You tend to only do one big batch of reprogramming on getting a vehicle but it is nice to have your own capability for the things you may wish to tweak, but it is not essential.
I do regard a code reader as a must have tool, even if you cannot understand it yourself, and reprogramming for the price of a code reader is becoming more common.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
