Hi

How did you work out it was a MAF problem?

What is "ESF" ?

Cheers

I had a noticeable case of this recently. 2 things I've done made things dramatically better, though it still fluctuates a tiny bit sometimes.

1. I finished my tank of diesel and filled up again (maybe a batch of crap diesel).
2. I replaced the MAF sensor (the thing attached to the air filter case) as it was giving me an random, occasional ESF in cold weather.

Not sure if any of them helped or if it was just a coincidence.

PS. Mine is a manual transmission with EGR's blanked.

Sorry know this is an old post but was this ever resolved?
My symptoms are identical to the description.

I can say that its not:
MAP sensor
Battery - mine was bad though
Glow plugs - 5 of mine work and im in AU so min 10c

Two of my injectors have high values
I get a high fuel trim logged on cylinder 6 injector 6 - but looking on here some folks have this with no issues

I'm going to test my low pressure pump soon.
Ill check for fuel contamination as well and put in some diesel cure.

I got a few quotes from some injector places just to test them and i was shocked. I need to find a place that will do a spill test as that should be cheaper.

I had the exact same issue with mine when I first had it and think it was one of my first posts. Robbie suggested it could be the oil temp sensor which has been said earlier in the thread. I replaced it werk before last due to work commitments etc and it now idles smooth and even. Unless it's in drive and its then jerky but that's because my torque converter is shot. A little belated but thanks Robbie, I wouldn't have known where to start ! Thumbs Up

I bought an oil temp sensor to put in during next oil change but got a scantool in the interim. I found my oil temp values were normal as was my coolant temps. Never the less i replaced it anyway but it didnt help. Both LPFP and HPFP pressures were fine.

At least half my issue was my EGR valves:
P0405-00 EGR Sensor A - Circuit low
P1335-00 EGR Position Sensor Minimum Stop Performance

Live values looked ok but EGR command was 0

Once fixed:
Very rough intermittent 256 rpm idle drop when cold - gone
256 rpm idle surge during warmup - still there ever so slightly (only seems to happen after i drive one particular route - down a very steep hill for roughly 5 mins then i have to stop at lights)
Lot more power when cold
Noticed engine gets up to temp a lot quicker in low load situations

Car still has trouble catching during initial cold start (fairly certain thats my injectors) but after catching on all cylinders she idles smooth now and stays that way for rest of the drive *excluding that wierd surge*

Would the torque converter affect idle cuality? Shocked

Stav it ended up being injectors for me in the end. I replaced two and it didnt make any difference. Then i recently replaced last 4 and since then my cold rough idle has completely gone and the intermittent lumpy start has also gone even with 1 non working glowplug. I had 1 dud injector that visually we could tell was either clogged or worn to point its not atomising as it was dry Shocked and its balance was around 1230 before i replaced it.

My fuel economy has gone from 9.8 to 8 litres per 100km as well and on cold starts shes drives like she does warm now not sluggish at all.
