Need to remember it is a Ford engine ..LR don't make theirs yet Here's what they have to say though
Quote:The structural oil pan is of a single piece die cast aluminium construction and is fitted to the lower cylinder block to stiffen the base structure of the engine, helping to reduce noise, vibration and harshness. The oil pan also incorporates an oil baffle plate to reduce oil foaming and splash.
The oil pan is secured to the cylinder block with 2 dowels, 2 locator pins for the gasket and 18 retaining bolts; 3 different lengths of bolts are used:
Iron inserts, cast into the main bearing supports of the stiffening frame, minimize main bearing clearance changes due to heat expansion.
A gasket seals the joint between the oil pan and the cylinder block.
An oil pick-up pipe with integral strainer locates in the oil pan to provide oil to the crankshaft driven oil pump.
An ultrasonic sensor provides an electronic indication when the oil in the oil pan is low or high. This removes the requirement for the mechanical dipstick. An advantage in comparison with the static 'dipstick' method is that all marginal influences, for example vehicle being on a slope, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, are compensated for by averaging.
The values determined can be used to signal that the minimum oil level has been reached or to display the current oil level if required.
The sensor is mounted inside the oil pan where it sends an ultrasonic pulse vertically upward, it then measures the time for the pulse to be reflected back from the top surface of the oil.
Warnings will be displayed in the message center if the oil level is not maintained within the safe operating levels (minimum and maximum). It should then say:
When the driver receives a warning the sensor is faulty, they are b D as there is no way of knowing the oil level.

Hmm nice tech speak from Ford
My old D4 I informed me 2 litres was required, seemed an awful lot, so put 1 litre in and then re checked

Dipsticks do have their failings, I race a Caterham and we usually cable-tie the dipstick in place so that it doesn't work loose. I've followed someone round a track whose dipstick had said bye-bye, it wasn't fun and he was lucky to still have an engine. Less likely on the road in a Land Rover, though!
Also, most people can't find the bonnet release catch, let alone the disptick. So an electronic thingummy will at least let those people know when there is a problem.
But I miss being able to see the colour of the oil.

That someone else sees my point on dipsticks......
A dipstick is simple & it works....
An electronic one has far more to go wrong e.g. Not telling you you have too little oil or too much
Just think how many cars have been made with dipsticks & the one that have "failed"
I have the same thing on my XK.....sadly
Would gladly swap for the simple manual device that doesn't need to be in the right condition to read the level. BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
