Testdrive with a MY08 D3

Hi there,

I have been lurking on these sites for a few months now and collected a wealth of information about the D3, it's problems and all possible fixes. Loved the Landrover brand from the first time we had a safari in Tanzania and drove a Defender 110 for 3 weeks in terrain it was made for. Guess what my first Landrover was... Wink

Anyway, now we are in the market for upgrading our daily driver, a Ford Mondeo, to a D3.

Saturday we took one of the possible candidates for a test-drive, a MY08 HSE 5-seater in Buckingham Blue with spotless interior and Logic 7 Audio and some other nice goodies. It's got high mileage, 160k but that is not uncommon here in NL, most 2005/06 and 07 D3's have these same mileages.
It's dealer maintained and got the books to prove it. Belts done at the right interval, EGR's have been changed at some point.

Everything electric, and that's a lot on a HSE, was working as supposed. Suspension is fine, compressor seems to run normally and for a normal time after using the settings.

But... armed with my notes collected here what to watch for I noticed the following things:
Engine System Fault displayed (that was easy spotted....) Accompanied with lack of power below 2000 RPM. No smoke
Here I suspect a stuck or badly moving Turbo Actuator Rod. The car has been for sale since May, and not used since. (It had to be jump started) So maybe that's the case.

Transmission shudder when accelerating. I think a transmission flush is in order after these mileages. And some Dr Tranny added afterwards.

Slight shudder in steering wheel. No idea what causes this, but maybe related to the next one?

Knocking sound when driving over uneven terrain, suspect suspension arm bushes. Only knocking sounds from the front of the vehicle.

EPB screeching like Censored when applied. This one got the sales persons running to see what was happening.

And last but not least, a stuck CD in slot 1 of the Audio Unit.

So am I totally wrong with above assumptions? The dealer will fix all these point prior to selling.

I got the car's VIN but no means to check it's number in TopIx.

Tell the dealer to fix everything before you sign, otherwise you could end up like I did, waiting 16 weeks to finally have everything done including 8 of these weeks being without the car.

I'm sure there will be a few more out there without faults currently present at the right price.

Thanks brightsparking for taking the time to read and reply.

Sadly D3's are sparse here. With roadtax €2750,-- a year and a starting price of €94000 for a HSE, not that many are sold. RRS's on the other hand are numerous...

But I keep looking...

The steering knock is common. To do with the steering column.

Could be new turbo with engine.

Say you will have another look at it once fixed but if not LR dealer they may not get it right.

The Turbo Actuator can probably be freed and will be fine.

You are correct in all of your assumptions Thumbs Up

ESF will be a seized turbo actuator, as it has been sat for 6 months

Transmission shudder will be a trans oil flush

Wobble through steering could be a few things, but more than likely worn bushes at 160k. Possibly inner steering arms/T.R.E's, lower column etc. Especially if it is knocking

EPB is a common issue. Probably only a strip/clean, maybe seized shoes.

Stuck CD may require a head unit, but try a hard reset first

All fairly common issues for the mileage stated, and being parked up for so long. Would also be checking for seized calipers too Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up Thanks all for the replies!

Dealer is going to fix the sticking turbo actuator rod first so I can have a proper testdrive with a responsive engine.
