Weird FBH encounter - should I worry??

Had my D3 since May 2011. As far as I knew, my FBH did not work and never seen anything or heard anything that's suggests it does work. Figured it didn't work as there are no options in the menu.

Been out today and drove home (about 30 minute drive). Stopped at the shops by my house and wife jumped out the car. I was stationary but with the engine running still.

SWMBO came back to the car and as she opened the door, I got a strange odour at which point she said, there is smoke coming from under the car. I turned off the engine and jumped out, looked underneath from the drivers side and could see bluish / whitish smoke coming from the front near side underneath of the car. Popped the bonnet and could hear the FBH was running.

Is this perfectly ok? May be it has been running before but I've just ever realised.

Any comments would be gratefully received!

Chris.
