Cruise issues

My cruise speed is 2 - 3 mph higher than the set point, if I up (or down) the speed by 1 press it does not follow the command and usually by more than the 1 mph required, sometimes it just keeps ramping up until I have to cancel the command.
It means that using the cruise in speed restricted areas is very unreliable - anyone any ideas for a fix?
