Stop kidding yourself Dave You are just trying to justify your choice by denigrating others. You wanted an XS and that's fine ...I wanted an HSE and that's fine. Using selective points of features and specification over and above the xs doesn't portray the full value of the difference. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Dave my desire for additional gadgets is just that ...there is no desire for elitism on models whatsoever ...I am just a gadget spec freak Fundamentally you are the one making out that those that choose a higher specification perhaps to satisfy this gadget freakery is some kind of negative. I think your choice is positive for you and you should feel the same for me 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

The way the conversation is going reminds me of this:
"I look up to him, because he has a HSE, but I look down on him, because he has a GS."

Time for a change of avatar dangerdave, the logic is beginning to sound suspiciously like the real David Cameron?

DD, I think it's your use of the word superfluous.
For some a sunroof is a highly desirable option. For me having a fraction more headroom to play with can mean the difference between being comfortable or having back pain on a long distance journey.
I don't know what the sales figures are, but I certainly notice a lot of HSE D4's on the road. Wouldn't be surprised if the HSE actually outsells the XS.
One could easily argue that a D3/4 was a superfluous vehicle full stop. As it's beyond what is required or sufficient anyway. None of us actually NEEDING all of its capabilities and luxuries. I'm old enough to remember when a car with electric front windows and a cigarette lighter was considered "luxury"
We all buy what we want, which isn't necessarily what we need, within a price that we're comfortable with.

I know a guy who often tells me that he only buys cars to go from A to B and that's why he buys the lead in model of whatever car he chooses to buy. However, when anyone else buys something of perceived superiority he displays quite an unfriendly and jealous side to him. I tend to think that he'd be much better just being frank and saying that he buys what he can afford, rather than what he'd like to buy as most of us do.
I realise that the XS is probably the best all around value for money car in the range but that doesn't mean that its the one that everyone wants. Lots of people will want these lovely cars but for me I always tell my sons to go for the car that they want(providing they can afford it) rather than buying a lower model and adding large amounts of money putting in options that come as standard on the higher models.
I'm honestly not trying to put anyone down with this post but rather wanted to say that we are all different and choose cars and models and even options dependant on a large number of reasonable factors. It's just good that whichever Discovery we pick we will get a nice car. All that I Pay my Psychiatrist is the price of Feed and Hay.....and he listens to me All Day

It's a marketing ploy by LR to get people to upgrade their original choice to an HSE.
For example, I've got used to having memory seats on my lowly SE...can't have them on XS so what's the option?
Live without or spend the extra
You only live once so HSE it is
Sod paying nearly £2k for a black pack though....they're doing lovely business there giving out different colour stuff you've already got and charging for it...bargain!!!
Ok, I know you get bigger wheels but with a bit of wheeling and dealing on eBay and a decent tyre supplier you'd upgrade for £200, spray grill and jobs a goodun. Welcome "Lola"

Thanks for all the advice and comments.
So I test drove the XS today. Lovely motor....but do you know what I missed most from my SE....the armrests! Might sound stupid, but after driving around I've come to the rather expensive decision, that armrests are almost as important as the auto gearbox....climate....4WD and so on.
Thankfully, next to the XS was a Landmark special edition. Black leather (better for the kids than the cream) and with armrests. Alright it's got an extra 10k on the clock, but it'll do the job.
I'll have to wait until next time to sample the benefits of the HSE (so that I get my armrests) and the 8 speed box.
Collection next weekend I think.
Thanks again.....
