Happy New Year all,
Ok, so I bought a wireless CMOS reversing camera for myself.
I would like to splice the camera into the reversing light circuit so that it is powered only when the reverse lights come on and the small 2.4" monitor also spliced into a similar circuit in the cabin.
Can someone help as to which wires/plug in the rear I can safely splice the camera into (or can I just attach via the reverse light itself?).
Also, where would be recommended for powering the monitor up only in reverse?
cheers regards
Peter

I'm very interested in the idea of a camera. (After all.. I'm a professional photographer!!)
Where did you source yours from and what sort of money?
It seems to me the idea of powering up the camera when in reverse is a good idea.. and as for the monitor, I guess you could tap into the feed to the rear park assist. It only comes to life when the car is in reverse. At an educated guess (I used to be an auto electrician in a past life) the switch to turn off the rear park assist may simply interupt the power supply to the unit. If this is so, then you could feed the monitor from this point. Check to see if the pwer side of this switch is only "live" when the car is in reverse) I would check on the current draw of the monitor first though.. don't want to cook anytning.
Cheers

I have a similar setup in a different car and it was easier running the power to the display from the reverse lamp - the display draws mAs so the extra current on the lamp circuit was not an issue. In that car I took the cable under the headlining and had the monitor in the rear view mirror. Still thinking about it for the D3 as I have got quite good with the parking sensors and a £5 plastic stick on rear window lens!

I think you will find the" rear park assist " works
in any gear, example if a vehicle or pedestrian
gets close to you at traffic lights lets say,Beep!
Beep! off it goes.
Just trying to help I think the reverse
light would be best option.
Best of luck. Always walk behind a Shooter and

Has anyone tried the wireless reverse camera setups? What is the best camera to use CMOS or Bullet type?

I use a 2.4GHz remote camera with monitor as full-time rear-view system on the caravan. It works fine although we occasionally get other peoples' transmissions for a very short while and RFI for seconds at a time. Plan K (i.e. long way past 'B') is to fit full-time rear-view to D3's rear end... \it seems a waste just for reversing.

PS CMOS or Bullet - not a clue, but I will check... 2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

@ AndrewW,
How is your rear camera set up between the D3 and the C/van. I guess it has it's own monitor in the D3 ? Is it big, and where do you put it.
Sounds like a good idea, will into this for this years travels Mrs Jones ? We've come for your Liver

You said "PS CMOS or Bullet Shocked - not a clue, but I will check..."
No need. The bullet camera fits in the bumper but is a CMOS type. Red Herring! Sorry.

Bill - it's a CMOS.
Nigel - mine is more clunky - I will try to post the mfrs details if I can, but I have a camera about the size/shape of a lemon (= biggish) connected to a 4-channel (choose one of 4) transmitter (2.4Hz, legal). Camera is demountable and I could/can get the bullet fitting. Colour +, night vis. -.
Receiver is a 2.4 GHz 4-ch 5" screen which will scan up to 4 cameras in sequence, or concentrate on one channel. I currently mount it on a block of wood turned down to wedge in the driver's cupholder as a stopgap measure (I don't drink and drive and I bought the car 2 weeks before going off to France) but it worked well.
Camera output is switchable to mirror image (otherwise it's very confusing)
More details later,

Mark,
I got mine in Sydney in Liverpool from 'the gadget shop' which was closing down. I got 40% off, down to $140 ($260 a bit much at original price I thought).
It IS 2.4 Ghz .
Thanks for the tips so far guys. I think I will power the camera from the reversing lights and the monitor only draws 10mW so will possibly try powering it from the positive side of the rear PDC switch or at least it's fuse.
NOW, can anyone identify the location of either the rear PDC positive cable OR where it's fuse is?
Having had a look the position of the camera may be problematic. The number plate is offset and so the camera will give good views of what is behind the passenger rear but may NOT cover what is directly behind the drivers side rear!?
The only other 2 positions are either high up on the centre brake light cluster (using double sided tape) which is where I think I will put it OR low down on the bumber above the central detachable panel (but this may cause problems if a towbar is fitted).
The monitor can fit quite nicely on the flat part of the instrument cluster on the left side slightly obscuring the RPM counter in the 0-1000 range. There is NO way I could run a positive off the reverse lamp fuse without jamming a wire in beside the fuses metal prong (as there is no access to the rear of the fuse panel). I am a bit unwilling to try to pull off the part of the dash that holds the PDC on/off button without somebody explaining with pictures how this should be done. regards
Peter

Very easy ..just pull off the dash surround ,held in with 4 clips.
Grab the bottom of both sides and pull.
Then there's 2 torx screws holding the top row of switches in place ..thats it.
The plug on the back is quite small , and unless you want to splice into a wire ,i cant see what use its going to be to you. What about the parking aid module itself ...that has a +12 output for the rear (or the front) parking sensors and is located in the far rear cubby hole (near side).
Pm me an email address and i will send you the documentation if you want.
As far as mounting the camera ..i have one fitted in the section behind the removable panel.I have no problems with towing ( although i dont tow on a regular basis)
Towing electrics are on the opposite side.
Was going to fit it high up on the back window , but it was near impossible to see at night as i have tinted windows.
Or if you still wanna take a wire from the fuse box ..get your self something like this ... http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=071-585

thanks for that Wiggs.
Will have a look later. I am happy to splice in wire into back of connector to PDC button. I guess it is usually a 'always on' switch and is only off when you push the switch? Therefore power is there continually but only when reverse is engaged. regards
Peter
