but cannot comment as I have not used them yet, there is also some official winter stopping distances some where else that I can't find.
If you're referring to the "official" rating system, then yes the Vredestein Wintracs in 255/55/19 are Wet Grip rated E. The lowest rating being F and the highest being A

My own experience of driving a D3 shod with Vredestein Wintracs during the winter months, were that they were superb on fresh snow, compacted snow and ice. Fine/Average in other conditions. To be fair I only experienced normal braking when either driving myself or being driven, so can't comment on "emergency" stops.
As for prices, as always they varies considerably. Using Camskill as a benchmark, the higher rated Goodyear and Continental winter tyres are actually a little cheaper than the Vredestein's.

OK some interesting data.... |
|
I read this type of test results with the open mind I think they need...
but dig a bit deeper & input alternative makes & types of cars (I used all mine) & read the script in there....my feelings are these tests are a lot subjective.
Maybe a way forward is to:
1) Ask AJS to list the basic price of all the tyres they can supply that fits the disco (17", 18" & 19") in winter & summer types......this will be far less that the list on the survey.AJS will stock what they can sell....& maybe bring in those that are special order harder to get
2) This will exclude the tyres in the survey that are listed, but for practical purposes unavailable...by that I mean will there be 4 tyres at AJS or some other reasonably accessible outlet when you need them...I have found this to be the biggest hurdle......come the winter months winter tyres are like rocking horse poo.
3) Then see what practical user data there is either on here or from elsewhere.
I am not bothered about running my Wintracs all year..I simply haven't the cash to have & use two sets....although I have done this in the past with 2WD cars.
I dont drive like a rally driver & take extreme care not to go to places & get into situations that I cant handle.. & I'm not a wimp & have driven here (&abroad) in appalling conditions that would stop an ordinary 2WD car, a 4WD maybe badly driven, or without tyres suitable for the conditions.
So for me my tests validate my informed choice.
I have bought Vreds as they are known to me & I can buy them when I need them....you are not overwhelmed by choice I have found. BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

I always pay less than Camskill (remember that you have to add £2.99 carriage and then pay for fitting) from the local tyre suppliers that I use. Camskill do have competitive prices, so useful as a benchmark when comparing prices
I only run winter tyres on one of my cars, a Saab. I find its actually cheaper to do so. The smaller 16" alloys were purchased used for £150. The 16" winter tyres should be good for 4 maybe 5 winters and are considerably cheaper than the 17" Goodyear Eagle F1's I run in the summer, which have a soft compound and wear quickly. Not subjecting the nicer alloys to the salt abuse etc of winter driving is a bonus.
