This is the feedback section, isn't it. Well.... |
|
Before I start, let me be clear on one thing: I have been lucky enough to make friends with many of the members here, and I'm not siding with any party in particular. I'm just having a general rant...
I ask you to consider how many useful [some extremely so] contributors (sponsor or otherwise) is it that we've lost from this forum in the last 12-18 months... and why? Some simply because they felt the same way I do.
I think it's a great shame we have lost these people - their knowledge has been invaluable to 100s, nee 1000s of us over the years, and their comments/replies have provided some humour as well.
Having joined this forum late in 2007, unfortunately two years after buying the D3, it meant I'd already made some mistakes or paid over the odds for things on our D3. However, at that time, this was an "open discussion" forum where we all could openly discuss and comment upon pretty much anything, not only D3 related topics; and we all got a fair crack at saying what our opinion was. In fact, within reason, we could say what we wanted (provided we abided by certain rules about profanities and whatever). As a general rule there seemed to be a Gentleman’s agreement that no member slagged off another member, their comments, or their products/services - certainly not to such an extent that it caused offence or even came close to litigation.
I’ve viewed and have become members of several other forums since joining this one, some covering the same general subject matter, or at least attempting to, but none have come close to being such a good technical resource as this forum “used†to be.
Although this forum is still a good technical library, if you can be ar$ed to use the search facility, and does still have members who are willing to provide good feedback, I feel we have seriously lost out in the past few years.
So, what do I think has contributed to this decline...?
Here’s a few for starters...
1. Over commercialisation of the forum, leading to sponsors slagging each-other off instead of us making up our own minds who/what we think is best for our requirements
2. A general lack of courtesy between members e.g. new members taking the pi$$ out of replies that are meant to be helpful, but construed as “teaching granny to suck eggs†because in their original request they haven’t given any background and then think your reply is a wise crack – happened to me in the last 24 hrs and the prompt for this post
You can tell me to wind my neck in now, or even to feck off if you want [stand in line as you won’t be the first], but all I can say is that it’s a bl00dy great shame and for the benefit of the general membership and survival of this forum people should return to old ways.
Right; rant over
I'm going back to the vino LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

I'm going back to the vino
1. I think thats the same as any forum these days TBH... the days of a forum run purely for the benefit of the users has long gone... not saying that's a good or bad thing, but it's definitely changed the feel of a lot of forums in my experience.
2. I can't say I've seen much of this on here, but maybe it's just 'cos I've not read those posts/threads.
Think it was a fair rant though... and I'll join you in the vino

This site is a victim of its own success. I can't see it ever being like it was back in the old days. I'm not sure I can imagine any site building up the sense of community that we had back then, I think it was an extremely lucky accident.
But then, I've been on the vino for hours, so I've gone a bit maudlin.
And now, wind your neck in and feck off...

A bit like you MrH, I bought my D3 2 years before I came across the forum and could've saved myself a fortune. I've also made a few friends as well.
Just read the post you refer to, must have missed it earlier, there's no room for that kind of bullsh!t on here, we're all here to help and if your anything like me, the help is much appreciated.

Please don't think I'm singling out any one person, I've not named and shamed anyone on here because it's not any one person I wish to blame or could blame.
I think Rob is right, we'were extremely lucky how the forum started out and initially developed, it's just a great shame we've let things slide this far and become "just another forum" LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Calm down Tres ....this thread is the annual reflection on how it was so good..... and how it's now so bad ....sadly for those who think it's so bad, we forget that we are "yesterdays men" ......life ....and the forum.... moves on relentlessly 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

You know that there was a guage of some sort that you could import onto your posts showing your fuel consumption, well could we possibly get a similar one to show members menstrual cycles, that way we could all be a bit more tolerant and understanding

Well a "decline" is usually a negative Matthias ... I know what you are saying but you, I and "we" are being sentimental TBH. Whatever the "active" proportion of the 14.5k site users who have registered in the last year or two is ....I don't think they see the negative in the same way us old timers do ....they probably couldn't give a stuff about the old sponsor arguments or who might be making a buck or two ...as long as the site provides an overall benefit then that is what is important 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Not true, I'm a member of several forums (Not necessarily LR ones) that are run on a non-commercial basis and for the members. In at least 1 case, all costs being met by donations from the members.
All of them have a sense of community. Mark.
