Can't see the problem with that. You've still got 3 driven wheels with good tyres and as the car doesn't instantly stop when you get a puncture you will have already driven on it for some distance. Another couple of feet won't hurt in most situations, and in the situations where it will you just go with plan (a), grab the cable and pull the wheel out that way.
It could be worse. With the old Rover P5 the tyre and jack were mounted under the rear floor and if you had a puncture on a rear wheel you didn't have enough clearance to get the jack out......I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I tried setting the suspension up to max height before unwinding, then setting it back to access height once unwound, and it worked a treat. It just gives you enough play to pull the spare forward a bit and unhook that stupid mechanism without damaging your arms too much
Granted you probably won't be able to do this in a puddle of mud, but it helps on the road.
My "proper" spare is already in the boot for this weekend in Salisbury with the spacesaver back in the cradle for crumplezone duties. I wouldn't consider going offroad with my only spare hung under the car, that would be asking for trouble!I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? Ok , total lenght is aprox 130mm (including socket and bar ).
This is based on an 1/2" drive socket and bar i had originally tryed.
Unfortunaty i have loaded my car back up and its a royal pain in the to unloaded it to check 100%.
I can check for deffo tommorow if it helps after i unload all this.
Unless some one who dosen't have a boot full could measure and check ..just put one seat down and measure from the floor up level with the seat .
Perhaps in hindsight i should of measured in the first place , but hey im only human.
When i know for deffo i will add to the procedure at beginning of this post.G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

saying that you will have to measure from inside the plastic shroud that covers the spare wheel bolt ..as it sits slightly lower than the floor.G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

For a perfect fit I used
22 x 1/2" socket
3/8"F x 1/2"M adaptor
1/4"F X 3/8"M Adaptor and
1/4" x 75mm extension
The top is flat with the floor and fits between the seats.06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

Excelent Idea
Just had the bits come in the post, and done the mod.
I have used,
22 x 1/2" socket
3/8"F x 1/2"M adaptor
1/4"F X 3/8"M Adaptor and
With the height of the three above parts, the seats stop it jumping off the nut head, and I have in my tool kit a 100mm 1/4" extension and tommy bar, that I can slid between the folded seats. This is quite tight but fits great, I was concerned about 1/4" drive undoing a 22mm socket, but it works great.
A 75mm extension was just a bit to short for me, but it all depends on the length of the other three parts, put together.
But a great idea, I will not have to empty the boot again if I get another flat. Arctic Frost Discovery 3 TDV6 SE, Active Rear Diff, Adaptive Head Lights, Tow Pack, Ebony Leather, Roof Rails, Mantec Guard. Tasmod Stainless Sill plates. Grabber AT's. Home made mud flaps. Side Steps back on until the next time.
